This book was great! Danticat is an excellent writer- I was immediatly captivated.

I sat down and read this book in a few hours. My eyes devoured every word on this page like I was reading the stories of my own kin. How was Edwidge Danticat able to breathe so much life into these pages? I’ll never know and never understand. Each story made me gasp. The migrants? The political terror? The first generation stories? The accusations? And the yearning for love? Each story could happen today and has happened yesterday and years before that. My mom read this book in 1996 and I’m reading it in 2023. I think Edwidge would find that beautiful. Because these pages are the only things they can bequeath to us when they’re gone.

Beautiful and devastating.
