I did enjoy this book. It contains several mini-stories of Haitian women over time, acting as snap shots of their diverse suffering, family lives and the power hope. Each story is very powerful and inspires deep thought. Danticat has a very unique way of writing I found refreshing. I enjoyed the used of symbols, and examples of Haitian myths.

"All the women who came with us to the river, they could go to the moon and back if that is what they wanted."

"But look what he gave us instead. He gave us reasons to want to fly. He gave us the air, their birds, our son."

"What goddesses have joined, let no one cast asunder. With every step you take, there is an army of women watching over you. We are never any farther than the sweat on your brows or the dust on your toes."

Children of the Sea especially.

Edwidge Danticat's prose and stories are simple, short and powerful. Some resonated with me more than others, but I also loved the way in which she decided to make the stories chronological, communicating the way in which there is personal, family, and cultural history reaching through time to make us who we are.
