Short stories that wove together. Beautiful writing and imagery.

Edwidge Danticat is amazing. Her writing is wonderful and the stories are evocative and moving. But I am more of a novel person -- not short stories.

I really enjoyed the short stories and how we saw each character from different perspectives as we read each story. Clever. There were a couple of stories I struggled to follow and that is why I gave it 4 stars. I do enjoy the author’s novels and highly recommend them.

I did not expect this to be the first book I finished this year, but once I started it, I simply couldn’t get enough. These stories, loosely connected, are heartbreaking. Haiti is a heartbreak all its own, but these stories of people who have lived their Haitian (and sometimes American) lives are just impossibly heartbreaking. And yet, there is just the slightest thread of hope in each one. It’s not strong hope, but it’s enough that it keeps you from bursting into tears at the sheer pain of it all. Danticat’s writing is sublime, but accessible. Their feel for the human condition creates characters who are broken, but also heartening. It’s a truly beautiful book, even without the proverbial happy endings.

I only read Children of the Sea, but I'm kind of inclined to find and read the entire book.

A touching and haunting collection of stories from the Haitian diaspora, from women who all share a common bond of some kind.
