PopSugar 2020 reading challenge #15

Imani is a young Maasi girl who is constantly mocked in her village for being small. Her mother tells her traditional stories about entities and beings who defied the odds and did amazing things. Eventually, Imani begins to believe in herself and says she’s going to touch the moon–and when she does, she creates her own story.

Finally, a children book with a fantasy. As an adult who is constantly brought down by our daily capitalist beatings, fantasy to help us remain helpful I find necessary. This book is for children and the child within us, the tired adults.

Imani’s Moon is about a Maasai girl named Imani who wants to do something great – touch the moon. Imani works hard to reach her goal despite the teasing she faces from the other children. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story includes elements of Maasai culture and mythology such as Olapa the moon goddess and Anansi the spider. The book also has a great message of working hard and not giving up no matter what others may say to reach your dreams.

A beautiful story of Imani, a girl who wants to touch the moon. The artwork is beautiful, and she manages to reach her goal, even when she is teased. The artwork for this is gorgeous, and I was fortunate to hear Brown-Wood read this story aloud. Beautiful!

Imani is little, but she has huge dreams and a mother who tells her she can do anything. This lovely story is set in Africa with the Massai people and is beautifully illustrated. I loved Imani and her mother's relationship and the stories the mother told Imani every night.
