The funny book, the one everyone absolutely has no criticisms of.
It's good, all things considered. From start to end Greg's books have been good enough reads for me to finish all 5 in a year (or was AGOT last year, I forget)
The only plotline I really didn't care for where Dany's chapters. They were a bit boring as I didn't care for any of the side characters. However the Reek plotline was a highlight. Seeing how absolutely screwed he is was frankly wonderful to read and seeing where it went. Well. I loved it.
Jon's chapters also reached the absolute peak of my enjoyment. And the handful of one-offs or pov's with a couple chapters were pretty fun too, except maybe Quentyn, who I didn't dislike but kinda got bored with during his first chapters.
Overall I liked Dance and I'm looking forward to the next book if it comes out. If it doesn't, I will live. I trust Greg's judgement.
RIP Roy Dotrice, your narration was not amazing, but it is now canon to me, faults and all.

Wow! Now I understand what Martin called his "Meerenese Knot" - the threads there did get quite tangled and it was hard for me to keep all the different sellswords straight. But the rest of the book was just awesome! And so unsatisfyingly exciting! I already can't wait for the next book!
Goodreads wouldn't let me update my progress that I am 1000% done with this book, so I'm just updating the review instead.

Like Feast of Crows, it was uneven. Slow at the start and the plot has gotten very muddled and complicated. But it had a strong finish (nothing like having the author rip out your heart and stomp on it in the last 20 pages!)
THREE OUT OF FIVE STARS!!! 5.71 CAWPILE
Idk why but I just didn't enjoy this book near as much as the others in this series. There truly comes a point where there are too many characters that don't matter that clutter up my brain. At times I was just plain confused and I didn't even care...I just went full stream ahead on the audiobook.
I love this world. Please don't get me wrong but there comes a point when it drags and things just don't make sense. For me...we reached that point in this book.
I love Tyrion with all my heart and I am hopefully that this sixth book get released at some point in life. Until then tho...I am going to continue to watch the HBO series for the first time.

Fuck it. 5 stars.
I’m sure if I looked closely enough at this book, many surfaced faults and frustrations would scream at me. I’m not saying you cannot love something without critiquing it, but for me, I needed to take this book as it is. Disappointment comes hand in hand with having love for this series, and quite frankly, I'm sick and tired of being angry and upset at something that brings me unmeasurable joy. What a masterpiece I have just read.
George tells a story in whispers and offhand comments, he forces you to read in-between the lines wherein you come across multiple explanations and possibilities, and he makes you sit on your ideas without ever telling you what the real answer is. He strings you along, promises you devastation and earth shattering wonder that even the hypothetical of it all makes you tear up. This book is the very accumulation of those unanswered questions, constant hints and suggestions, right before they explode.
This book is a constant pull into magic. Although not obviously, it shifts away from the wars fought on battlefield and on small council that have ruled the previous 4 books, and moves into a realm previously untouched. Bran, Jon, Arya and Dany are slowly leaving behind the realms of men, and entering into the phase before control, before power. Not of people or armies, but of themselves, and in turn, the absolute magic they possess. George has weaved their otherworldly future into their pages and words, they way they see the world around them, and most importantly, what they think of themselves.
The greatness George has promised will be worth the wait. There is so much hidden in a book often regarded as boring, where nothing happens. I love this book for what it is and how it makes me feel. Devastation for Theon, who sees his little brothers face in the weirwood. Frustration and hope for Dany and Jon as they navigate leadership and move forward, and towards each other. Confusion and horror for Bran as he lingers in the grasp of a power unknowable.
I’m scared for what happens next, but fear never knowing more. Maybe I have too much faith in an ever vague author, but all I know is that this book blows me away with every chapter. There is beauty in the promises, and a good fucking book in the simplicity of these events.
*Also, skipping every Tyrion chapter increases my love for this book by 17%. (Yes that is the exact percentage of this book that mongrel takes up. Almost 200 disgusting pages).
Ugh this one was sooooo good. Back to all of our main characters. This is the last of GOT books out and it ends when Jon Snow gets killed by his brothers in black. I’m glad I made it through all of the books that are out and hope that one day GRRM will finish the series. I’d love to see how differently he planned the books from the show, especially considering the differences already in place.
