Read this Roald Dahl book with my son at bedtime, as he got the whole collection for Christmas. This was one I hadn't read before, and the edition we read was newly illustrated by Quentin Blake. There's a note from Blake in the end about how this was the one Dahl book he didn't illustrate the first time around, so it was like a brand new book for him when they asked him to illustrate this edition. His drawings are subtler and probably more magical and sensitive than most of his in other Dahl books. The story is a fun little tale with metaphors of discovery and unrealised potential and the magic of nature.
First time reading this story. It was good. My daughter enjoyed it. The earlier Dahl books will always be my favourites. This book keeps up the Dahl tradition of madcap characters. The ‘feel of it’ as it were is not the same as the Dahl books of my youth. But it’s probably time that’s giving me that impression.
