This memoir goes into the complexity of political issues and the authors feelings on race, identify, and being the child of parents who immigrated to America.  I was left wanting more and didn't feel like the issues were explored as much as I would have liked.  I think this book would have been amazing as a regular book as apposed to a graphic memoir.  Due to the nature of it being a graphic memoir and the number of years covered the reading experience felt a bit disjointed.  Its a quick read and easy to follow.  Interested in picking up a novel or traditional non fiction work by this author.

Spoilers Ahead
I can’t lie, I really enjoyed this book. As a white woman, I think there’s so much that I’ve learnt from this book, things I didn’t even think to think about before. It’s definitely an eye opener.
We follow Mira, as it’s an autobiography of her life. We are shown how she has gone through her life, been with both men and women and found her husband, how they had her son, and, more importantly, how racism has impacted her life. She is very honest, and transparent, and it’s a very poignant read. There’s discussion on how scared they were when Trump was in power, how the elections affected their mental health and their lives, the impact of 9/11, the importance of skin colour. I would definitely recommend reading it. I really like how it’s written for her son (her son is a very comical character, and he has my entire heart), and I love the support of her husband, who told her to write truthfully and from her heart, and they will deal with the consequences later. I really love this book, and I really liked learning about Mira’s story.

Read it in one day and I'd read it again right now. I'd add it to every "Must Read" list out there.

um HELLO? One of the best books of all time??? Good Talk is a memoir told as a graphic novel about Mira Jacob’s experience growing up as a first generation Indian woman in America. I laughed so much and then suddenly I was crying … simply stunning and everyone should read it immediately

Dove into so many topics — post 9/11 America, colorism in Indian society, fetishization of skin tones.. it was a chronicle of her life, and things that happened to her or around her, told on the backdrop of questions her son asked — and framed around what she could or should tell her young, curious mixed race son.

Personally, I was missing some self-reflection — some of these situations she’s went through were tough and were bad but how did it affect her? Her thoughts, how she viewed the world? Ultimately I think that’s what I’d want to impart on the next generation — how do we take what we see happening to others, what has happened to us, and ensure we’re not upholding the same systems. This necessitates learning about the systems, of course, but I wanted more depth from her

I first read this in 2020 as an ebook and always thought it would be great to re-read a physical copy so when I found this for £4 I couldn't resist. I've never read a graphic novel like this and I find the combination of photos and realistically illustrated people so interesting. It's a very well constructed memoir dealing with racism and the 2016 election, while also often being really funny.
