Did not finish. Agreed with another review that stated for what is supposed to be a modern dilemma, a lot of gender stereotypes were included as the “norm”. I just couldn’t relate

Interesting and mildly depressing.

This book is incredible and insightful and SO important. It will be a #1 recommendation for me to all my mom friends.

I am not a wife, nor a mother, and I may never be either. But , for the sake of research while writing fiction, for the sake of understanding the plethora of new wives and new mothers in my circle (what is with that??), for the sake of understanding the persistent gender roles, frustrations, inequalities-- and feelings of guilt, inadequacy, and failure-- that plague modern women in general, but mothers in particular, it is a rich and compelling read. While informative and affirming and reassuring, I actually feel that it is probably a more essential book for new fathers or those hoping to support new mothers. For the world’s most common, most persistent, and most difficult task, raising children, there is remarkably little written on its less savory realities.

This is a book about motherhood in the context of (heterosexual) marriage, and while these pages explore only this one iteration of what it means to experience parenthood and marriage, it explores that iteration better than perhaps any book I've read yet. I felt seen in these pages in a profound way and also deeply uncomfortable. There are some painful truths here but also a path forward in terms of what it means to make sense of a life that is completely upended by becoming a mother. Millwood doesn't offer any easy solutions to either parenting or marriage struggles, but she does make certain to expose all the dark places the mind might wander after having a baby and put them in a context that allows you to understand the foundations of the struggle itself. If nothing else a lot of mothers are going to feel profoundly validated after reading this.

This is a must-read for anyone postpartum. Brilliant, expertly written and well-thought-out book with multiple takeaways that’ll stick with me for years to come. It identified and validated feelings I didn’t even know I had!
