Still quite good, but not quite as enjoyable as the first. You know those series where characters start making poor decisions and you're screaming "NO!! NO!!! YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO THAT!!" but they ignore you and do it anyways and then everything turns into a sort of cluster-you-know-what? This book sort of devolves into that. Still, really interesting development of characters and turns of the plot make the torture worth the while. So far so good.

Given the promise of the first book, I was surprised at how little direction this volume had ... and I'm left wondering, Who am I supposed to be rooting for here?

I really enjoyed The Providence of Fire. Action packed, epic, dark. Brought to vivid life by Simon Vance's excellent narration.

I must admit though that I was triggered by all the Gaslighting  by bad faith actors.  Seeing the protagonists maneuvered into bad decisions by fake news was just a bit too much for me at times and I had to take a break.

Wow that was one hell of a ride book two took us on!
Dude that ending…………..I’m glad I have book three ready.

3.5 rounding off to 3
Idk what happened but maybe its been too long since I read an epic fantasy so I was a bit disappointed seeing all the middle book sterotypes in this one.
Definitely character wise a great improvement on development to everything the whole plot and its stakes.
I loved the races and everything
But I do think it was too long unnecessarily it could have been shorter I feel,
I am definitely going to continue with the series though

A great fantasy book. I was doubting giving it 4 or 5 stars and settled for the later for two reasons: 1) the second book in the trilogy is clearly better than the first, and this is uncommon in this type of series and 2) The finale is extraordinary, again the part where many fantasy books fail and fall apart.

It is an epic fantasy book with a great focus on the politics of the Empire. I just love how the author develops grey caracters, not fully good nor fully bad, and how keeps moving the balance from one extreme to the other so you are always wonderign who is the bad guy here.

This book is very close to the level of the "Stormlight archives" series from Brandon Sanderson and Bren Week's "Lightbringer" series, my two favourite Fantasy writers right now.

To point a criticism, I find really anoying the repetitive use of the expression "Kent-Kissing" throughout the book. Based on the similar feedback I read from other readers, I believe the author would do better removing it from his future books.

I look forward to the third part.

Very good. Better than the first volume in spades. I only had two issues.

Spoiler1. Valyn is annoying, and makes all the worst decisions. Compared to oth his siblings, he's a moron.

2. The contrivance at the end of having Adare tell Valyn that "he doens't know everything about Il Tornja" but not ACTUALLY telling him why or what in any way, which might (WOULD) have stopped him attempting to kill Il Tornja and getting stabed and blinded in the process. The only thing I can think of is that Staveley wanted Valyn in a certain place/position for the 3rd book...but man that was a dumb part.

Otherwise, quite enjoyed!

DID NOT FINISH: 27%

DNF'd at about 30% once I realized I really just didn't care about the plot or any of the characters. Everything moved at a snail's pace, the characters always had to sit down and extensively discuss every single minor issue or development, which I'd be okay with in a more interesting book but in this case it felt excruciating.
