This is a great book. When I started this series I asked some people if they recommend it and was told the first book is good but then it's just okay. I found the opposite to be true. If you've seen any of my other reviews I'm pretty critical of middle books of series. This one meets my expectations to complaining to plot to a satisfying ending.
After reading reviews of people disappointed with this one I was little afraid I wouldn't be happy with the direction the characters develop. However this is not the case. Actually I rather enjoy the way main characters evolved. Sure, they're irritating at times but I didn't feel their choices were out of character.
The plot was interesting and I'm in love with Pyrre.
I give this book 4 stars because I really think some ruthless editing and cutting 20 % of the book would make it much more enjoyable. There were passages that didn't engage me at all but I forced myself to go through them in order to take notice of details. It was tiring.
Funny thing is I still have impression that Brian Staveley writes sidecharacters that are much more interesting than main ones. Pyrre is brilliant and her perception of life and reality is refreshing. Nira and Huutsu, even though they get limited space, makes you want to get to know them better. Flea and his wing are very cool as well. I wnt to know more about them. Actually I'm more intersted in their fates than in Valyn, Kaden and Adare future.
Today I'll start third book. I think the series is worth trying.

I liked this better than the first one. Still didn't fully connect with the characters and the remained the weak point of the book. However, the plot I liked a lot. I had no idea where the story was going (still don't) which is a big plus, especially in this genre.

That was really great! I love the changes in the point of view between the characters. Every sibling is different and has different opinions on what to do. Their different background stories all make sense.
I love how you can understand everybody and don't know for who you should root for. I also liked the magical aspects of the story and I'm curious to see how this trilogy will end.

Valyn got all dark and twisty and I'm pretty sure he's only going to get worse. I definitely thought he was going to be the peace broker between his siblings because they have such different visions of how things should end. But... that clearly is not how things will play out. He was my favorite of the three after the first book.
