Deception, betrayal, shifting alliances, and hidden motives galore; its great!
As gripping and addictive as the first book in the series. I particularly enjoyed how The Providence of Fire had the central characters really wrestling with their own moral code and how far they were willing to go to achieve their goals.
We thankfully get more Adare, who we didn't get enough of in the first book, and everyone's favourite wise-cracking murderous pansexual priestess, Pyrre, continues to bring some wonderful laugh out loud levity amidst all the high sakes drama. I also loved how Gwenna transitioned from foul-mouthed comedic relief to one of the most sympathetic and interesting characters.

Mini-Review:

4.5 Stars for Narration by Simon Vance
4 Stars for Cool Concepts
1 Star for Execution of Concepts
3 Stars for Characters
2 Stars for Plot Development & Story Flow

- Not well written as a whole. 1st half is a sludgefest. 2nd half is half baked events thrown in your face.
- Inconsistencies held me back from getting fully engaged by the story or any of the characters.
- When I finished the first book, I was excited to read the next installment. This time? I'm pretty sure that there will be cool events in the third book but I don't feel the drive to dive into it and find out.

So I finally read this. My first thought after finishing this book was that I shouldn’t have waited this long to finish it.

Story picked right where the first book ended. Kaden and Valyn are on their way to Annur, and Adare discovering the truth about his father’s death. Brothers go to Kenta where they separate ways and decide to meet at a particular monastery after a certain period of time. But both brothers fell in trouble and did not meet. Adare leave Annur to find an alley with which she could defeat Tonja. Needless to say things went from bad to worse for siblings and in the end they find themselves at crossroads, especially after some big revelations that author threw our way throughout the book.

There were many good things about the book. Sadly, the three main characters are not one of those. As the author has revealed some big secrets in this book, which in turn made the world more interesting and a little complex. I also liked how the author explored leaches’ magical abilities and gave us more insight into their magic. Secondary characters here stole the show. Gwenna, Triste, Pyree, and Nira, were outstanding. It’s so easy to fall in love with these women.

But the number of things that I didn’t like is slightly more than of what I liked. First this book is too long for my liking; I could have been shorter by 50-60 pages. It took almost 10-15 chapters for story to push into a certain direction. The three main characters were really whiny. Kaden was bearable but other two were just too much. Valyn was distrustful of everyone and think so highly of himself. Adare was proud, and think that she could do no wrong. Some questions were answered but in turn we got more to solve now.

All in all a decent addition to the trilogy which could have been much better with a little more editing.

Much closer to 4 stars! Staveley can definitely put an ending together... 2 for 2 in this series.

Triste is the most intriguing character... very interested to see what happens with her in the final installment.

I liked this a MILLION times better than the emperor's blades. Dude. Haha.

SO many revelations and secrets, and I don't know if I saw any of them coming

I had mixed emotions towards this novel, like the first in the series. It was hard to feel a liking towards the main characters. Just when you like one of them, they'll do something that makes you question why bother liking them. At the end though, I still liked Kaden. I think the author wanted to make his characters morally complex but it didn't really work for me. Give me either mostly good or bad characters and I'm happy. Like Jorg, the perfect anti-hero, of the Broken Empire series. I think the book could have been a lot shorter too. Why did I give this 3 stars? Well, parts of it were 4 or 5 stars which made up for the rest.

Well this one was dark. And amazing. And kept me on my toes.

Yes. A good book.

4.5 stars, I quite liked this book! So much more interesting than the first book.
