More fun with the poor Jewish family in early 1900s New York. A wedding and a health crisis are the major plot points, with some fun smaller diversions along the way.

I can't say enough about this series of books. I read them all as a child and we just finished listening to this one on audiobook. My two sons LOVED it and I enjoyed it just as much as when I was little. The story holds up well and my sons asked many wonderful questions afterward about the different ways that various religions celebrate. My favorite part of these books as a child was learning about all of the Jewish holidays.

I am reading this series completely out of order, but it is hard to imagine the original being any more charming than this one. A truly delightful read, and large families especially will enjoy the positive depictions of large family life. In addition, there are tons of teachable points to build from: Jewish holidays, the influenza epidemic of the 1910s, and more. I love this series.

This was another fantastic book in this series. I had no clue I would enjoy them this much when we started the first one.

The siblings in the All-of-a-Kind Family are growing up, with the oldest nearly sixteen and acquiring her first boyfriend. The Lower East Side is also changing, with Jewish families moving away to other areas of New York City to escape the crowdedness, propelled in particular by an epidemic of polio (called "infantile paralysis" in this book) that sweeps through the neighbourhood. Just another collection of charming escapades and vignettes.

Wow, this book really got under my skin as a kid in ways I had forgotten. This series was both exotic and super cozy for me in the way Little House must have been for suburban kids. I am finding myself recognizing the smallest details -- the messy uncle's makeover (I had a messy bachelor uncle!), the lemon and chocolate snaps in the cracker barrel (my folks shopped at a small country store with barrels of things!). Plus, a bunch of things I would not encounter in real life till Much Later, like latkes and the Lower East Side and honey cake.

PS -- the whole chapter where a nice young man leaves a note for Ella in a MIS-SHELVED LIBRARY BOOK and the librarian watches the whole thing go down with delight turned out to be the model for my career, too.
