Re-reading this book, because I bought the second volume.

Madly confusing at the beginning and it felt quite slow because you don’t understand everything. With a second reading it made so much more sense and you see all the hints - although one read is enough to understand everything.

There’s a lot of details and if you enjoy a well-developed character, this is for you. If you enjoy a thriller, crime book, this is also for you. If you enjoy a darker magic system where not everything is pink and cute, this is also for you.

This was such an enjoyable read! I wish the whole series was out so I could read them all.

This book interweves some historical snippets about the fantasy world, Alex' present happenings at Yale, and Alex's backstory together. I personally don't mind that form of story telling, but due to this being a fantasy story in need of a lot of world building, it meant that the first 100 pages were boring and hard to understand. After I finally began to get what was happening, the story really picked up! I loved learned about the magic organizations, Alex's roots, and delving into the mysteries of New Haven. I did find some of the magical action sequences to be a little blah, but I stayed hooked to the end (and quickly searched to see if book 2 was available at my library)!
