For a book from its time, definitely 4 stars. I can't speak of Verne's writing style as I read a translation, but his creativity and sense of adventure are marvels I encourageyou to discover. For those looking for an adventure story full of natural wonders and human dilemmas, give this shot.

I got 1/3 through. I tried listereading it but found myself zoning out and not really paying attention. Eventually I figured out that perhaps I was bored with the story. Man. I really wanted to like it. There are so many books out there considered classics and beloved that I don't like so I wanted to at least like this one. No go. It's not bad, it's just apparently not for me. I was interested at first but, for me, Verne spent too much time describing and there wasn't enough story to support it. What is impressive about the story is Verne's forward thinking. He was ahead of his time for sure. But alas, that couldn't hold my attention.

not bc the book's bad but rather the translation has to be one of the most, abridged i've ever read; like there were so many interesting aspects that were hinted at, only to be mention in a glance.
and yeah, i'm aware it was utilised as a form of education for kids back then; which makes the whole aspect of explaining various amounts of things, more understandable.
i thought it was only face paced at the start, nope... it was the entirety of it due to cutting a lot of the content; not providing breathing room for actual significant moments to simmer reader's in.
in all, loved what Verne was doing and how advanced he was; with his capacity for his imagination... dulled by an abridged version that castrate his work. will get a proper edition next time.

This was the second on my calendar reads, and I’ll admit it was a challenge for me. Though there were elements that swept me away—particularly the duality of Captain Nemo—it was tempered by too much cataloguing of marine life for my taste. Even so, I enjoyed it and easily understand why it is so beloved. I would certainly tell anyone who hasn’t read it to give it a try.
This is a hard on to decide on a rating for and to really pin down my feelings about it. On one hand, it gets incredibly stuffy and overly obsessed with describing in great detail the various species of sea life encountered to the point where I admittedly did some skimming to get past the pages and pages of things that I just didn't care about (glad I read this and didn't listen to it so I could do this!). On the other hand, the mysteries of the Nautilus and Captain Nemo were pretty fascinating and the themes presenting in here I really enjoyed!
Clearly Verne did a ton of research and loved his engineering and marine biology. The ways the Nautilus works are pretty painstakingly described, and that was definitely more interesting than pages upon pages of "and then we saw this fish."
I was also pretty disappointed in the conclusion to the mystery of Captain Nemo. I was expecting some kind of pay off but ultimately this didn't feel hugely rewarding in that aspect. I'm glad I picked it up but I'm also glad to have finished it and not have that feeling of "oh god is there going to be another fish passage?" each time I pick up my e-reader.
