This has everything. It's a romantic comedy, a tragedy, a historical novel, a political portrait and a soap opera. The language is a little challenging for contemporary readers, but once you settle into the style and rhythm, the observations and human insights are exceptional.

This book made me grateful that plot was invented so we didn't have to keep reading long novels about the life and times and social mores of the English landed gentry.
I enjoyed this book overall but at times I felt it too long and I started to lose interest in the characters.
A list of characters would also have helped.

Everyone says this book is slow, and I can’t exactly refute that except to say that the plot moves forward with such propulsive energy that I frequently stayed up late to read another chapter. Once you sink into it, the complexity of the language isn’t a barrier, and gives space for some truly beautiful passages and a gorgeous illustration of the characters. You know them all so well by the end of the book that closing it feels just as bittersweet as saying goodbye to childhood friends!
Ok, I didn’t really finish this book but I read the summary after reading about half of it. The story finally picked up and got interesting, but even with the great writing style the plot is just too drawn out for me to really want to finish the book. Plus once I already know the ending I am not really into reading the rest of the book. I might give this another go down the road.

I read this as part of an English class on Victorian literature at my university. Granted, I think without this class, I never would have picked up this book or made the effort to get through it. It’s a long book that requires a good deal of historical context and patience, and the pace is quite slow, but it truly is one of the greatest pieces of writing of its period and genre. Middlemarch is a perfect example of realist fiction and an incredible social history, with many characters who reflect dynamics of class and gender both as they relate to our time and that can resonate with modern readers. Definitely would recommend!
