I came across this book while wandering around a local Borders store. I like to check out the books on the table displays and usually at least 1 or 2 books jump up at me and beg me to give them a good home. This was one of those books.

I didn't realize when I picked it up that it is considered Young Adult literature, and it's been quite awhile since I've read anything in that category. I was drawn to this book because of the cover design on the front and back.

"Cathy's Book" is about teen who is on a mission to find out information about her ex-boyfriend and the work he does. The story takes place in San Francisco. She enlists the help of her friend Emma, who reluctantly helps her analyze the information she finds. Cathy engages in all kinds of activity to get information on Victor, including breaking into his home, following him into China Town, and breaking into his lab at the company he works at.

I really liked the character Cathy, and thought she was well developed. There was a level of teen angst to her but it wasn't overdone and it wasn't annoying. I thought she was incredibly inventive in the ways in which she went about obtaining information about Victor and I thought the book was amusing. I'm actually looking forward to reading the sequel, Cathy's Key. Each page of the book has drawings and doodles, which were really nice to look at and it was fun following Cathy as she gathered her information. I would recommend this book to anyone who was just looking for a little escape and little laugh.

I was intrigued at the beginning of the book, but around half-way I really lost interest. It was written in sort of a diary entry but there were some fantastical elements that weren't immediately explained. Either way, I found myself not connecting with the MC and really didn't want to know the secrets she was trying to uncover. After about 40% I decided to skim to the end, but I was okay leaving this one unfinished.

Gründe für das Buch:
- gute Geschichte die spannend und nicht vorhersehbar ist
- gut geschreieben im Tagebuchstil und den "Beweisen"
- Charaktere schließt man ins Herz und versucht herauszufinden was dahinter steckt

Interesting format with a pocket of "evidence" in the front for readers to look through. BUT, the format made it hard to hold the book, and the "evidence" wasn't necessary to the plot's outcome. A fast read nonetheless.

Very strange little book. Compelling and quick read but not at all what I was expecting. I mean, if it's going to be a little fantastical there should be some sort of indication of that right? Plan on reading the sequel just because the whole idea behind the book was too bizarre to stop after the first. I'm kind of at a loss for words.

My teens have been bothering me to read this book forver and I finally brought it home for the weekend. It's much shorter than it seems and much more intriguing. It's written in a diary format, which often seems gimmicky but this diary is full of action and dialogue. Cathy has an incredibly snarky voice that would be obnoxious in a best friend but is absolutely hilarious and perfect in the book. Plus, it's a realistic ficiton type book that turns out not to be entirely realistic. I won't say any more than that.

Cathy has a wild imagination and a keen eye for detail. Her best friend, Emma, is the logical one and Cathy's the artist of impossible dreams. Cathy's world is falling apart: her boyfriend broke up with her, insomnia has overtaken her nights, school is a chore that only Emma can love, her Mom works too hard to pay the bills, and maybe--just maybe!--her paranoid delusions about Victor aren't as delusional as she thought...

It's a mystery with flashes of comedy, doodles, heartache, dash of romance, fights for honor and crazy antics that lead to impossible answers. If you want an interesting adventure, you'll find one in Cathy's Book.

The front cover tells you that its Cathy's Book and to call 650-266-8233 if you find the book. The back has a note from Cathy to Emma. If you're NOT Emma, don't read the journal. If you are Emma, crack the sucker up and find out what's really been going on.

Emma:
"Tell them everything," she said. "Print out your diary and give them the letters and make them dial all the phone numbers and show them your sketches, because you know what?" she said, with her special Emma smile. "They won't believe a word of it."

I recommend getting the hardback version of this book. It comes with goodies! You can handle some of the evidence that Cathy finds during her "investigations". The book is full of drawings, comments, doodles, thoughts, records, website addresses, phone numbers and more. You really CAN look stuff up online, call the numbers to hear a message and piece together the answers as Cathy does.

I liked it. Not at first, but when I kept going, it was really good.
