I was so bored. I considered quitting or crying. Nothing ever made me care about any of the characters. It was grueling.

After enjoying 2001 and 2010 quite a lot, this installment was a letdown.

The story felt rushed and incomplete. Many characters with great potential were introduced, then ultimately underdeveloped. Several huge/interesting plot points occurred "off-screen" or were dismissed entirely. The book felt like a prologue to a richer, more interesting story.

Also, the aspects that tie 2061 to the previous books were barely represented and, because of this, lacked the feeling that it was really part of the same series.

[And one final, nitpicking complaint: I don't know how Clarke could believe that someone born in 1985 would have never heard of the Beatles. This is a minor point, but it does come up a few times. Clarke published this book in '87, he had to realize that the Beatles were still very well-known. In another section of the book, he has two characters discussing Star Wars and that was released in 1977. Characters in 2061 are familiar with Vivien Leigh in Gone With the Wind. How could that still be general knowledge, but the Beatles forgotten?]

I think I've figured out why I'm not super in to this series when I liked the first book: it lacks depth. I mean, now it's an (admittedly interesting) story taking place in space but in the first book, I felt there were undercurrents. Now, not so much. At least this one didn't seem so misogynistic.

This is probably the rare trilogy where the third book is as good, if not better, than the previous ones.

The saga continues. Although the author is clear that the books are not a simple continuation of the one into the other, but rather alteration of the same basi story, it’s nice to see how the history unfolds over time. As with all sci-fi it’s nice to see how sometime reality has overcome completely the imagination of authors (no trace of internet here...). But the imagination of the existence of this receded civilization so ancient to thrive across the universe is fascinating.

The 2001 connection is meaningless and this techo thriller would have been better without it. Not a good episode in the series.

Pretty much just filler before 3001 hopefully ties things up nicely.

Clarke once again proves he was an amazing writer, at least in my opinion.
