A fantastic allegory about racism, gentrification, and city life. I highly recommend the audiobook, for all the accents and sci-fi special effects. Loved it so much, I created the Wikipedia page for it!

I loved the characters, I loved the vivid depiction of the city, I loved the themes and speculative ideas and how they wove together. But the pacing was bad enough to bring it from 4 stars to 3.

This was on my TBR for years, so I was very excited to read it with my book club. I had a feeling that it would be a challenging read for me in some ways, and I was right about that. Loved the fresh premise and cool, at times gritty writing style, but maybe not quite my favorite type of book. I felt like it was a little hard sometimes to keep up with the more fantastical elements as well as the lore of the cities as avatars. I also felt like the story ended very abruptly where in other parts it dragged a little (so pacing was strange throughout).

After finishing the book, I enjoyed reading about the author’s inspirations, drawing from influences as diverse as Lovecraft to DuBois to the Power Rangers, which helped me appreciate the story on multiple levels.

The beginning I was drawn in. Then the third chapter I felt like I was losing the story, but things start to come together again and draw you in. I enjoyed The City We Became, it’s definitely a unique story.

There were times I lost the story line but this was still a fun read and will be reading book 2. It’s a weird story so I can see it being very hit or miss for readers. Worth picking up to find out!
