Maybe 4.5 stars??? I really enjoyed this though, so 5 stars! It's like everything I've been looking for in apocalypse romance. The ending felt rushed but otherwise I thought everything was well written. Maybe the ending will be explained better through the rest of the series.
★5 STARS★
I think it’s fair to say I had a slight cause for concern when going into Juniper Unraveling. I’ve never had any interest in reading a dystopian novel before, but such is the power of Keri Lake, I couldn’t have trusted a better author to take the leap with. The fact that it also hinted to harbouring one of her darkest heroes yet may have also given me reason to clear my throat with nervousness.
I’m the first to admit I’m a wimp when it comes to reads such as these. But if you were to ask me if my fears and hesitation warranted I would say, absolutely so. It’s been days since I finished Juniper Unraveling and I’m still reeling. Keri’s immense talent and creativity make for such a visceral reading experience it’s impossible to not be drawn into the world she’s created. To put it simply, she blew me away.
Set in a desperate time when human life is exploited and its sacredness disabused, Juniper Unraveling is story that needs to be experienced and not told. So vital is the plot there is not much I can without taking away the enjoyment of its unraveling. My emotions were at war with themselves and I was flitted between being unequivocally terrified to basking in unmitigated message of hope.
As is usual of Lake, the integrity of her characters was paramount to my enjoyment of the story. Wren and Six were courageous and their tenacity was admiral. In all my anxiety and it’s their romance that grounded me.
Writers like Keri Lake are very important to a reader such as myself. She takes me out of my comfort zone and pushes my boundaries in terms of new experiences. She’s imaginative and fearless and that is reflected in writing and body of work. My wits may be frayed but her status as one of my favourite authors is here to stay.
Cool take on zombies and the end of the world. Further proving to me that as a female, I do not want to survive an apocalypse. Sweeter than I thought it would be. I honestly liked the first park better than the later part. The latter seemed rushed and we didn’t get to settle into the scene or get to know those characters very well.
The first 50% of this is so epically, painfully sad, I almost DNF. But glad I did. More emotional damage

I should have known better since I’m obsessed with everything Keri Lake writes. This book sucked me in from the very first page & I b inged it within a couple days. I’m currently half way through the second book in the series & just as good

I waffled on this review for a little bit. I haven't read too many dystopian romances (as in--dystopian with gratuitous sex scenes, versus dystopian with a love interest) Is it leaning more toward a romance novel where I give it a "free pass" and don't even bother with a rating? Is it leaning more toward dystopia?
I've steered away from dystopian fiction, at least the hard core violent type as this one is, mostly for my own sanity. Occasionally I read some here or there, but it takes a lot out of me emotionally. This one definitely has some trigger warning scenes, horrifying violence as one can expect from a post-apocalyptic society. But here's the thing...I was okay with these scenes for the most part.
We are introduced to two POV characters - Dani and Wren. Dani's story definitely is the most horrific but the most interesting. Wren's story struggles with cloying insta-romance and very bad sex that Wren doesn't recognize as such (whyyyyyy). I started to suspect some sort of twist (as the author intended) where I actually got excited with some ever changing theories, that made suffering through Wren's awfulness worth it. Then twist happens--yes, I was surprised, but more than that I was extremely disappointed because there were some glaring holes to this and felt like a cheap way out.
Honestly, the whole Wren/Six section (the first half of the book) and the twist was so terrible for me that it tainted the whole book. Ignoring all the problematic points--if those had been done differently I may have had a different opinion about the book. Especially since I love to gobble up romance and I love new genres that aren't overdone. Too bad.

It reminded me of Resident Evil with more violence against women and romance.

Complicated characters because of everyone's backstory. It was a romance that also focused on the father-daughter bond and other relations. It was a truly traumatic backstory and dani=wren was a shock.
