Juniper Unraveling

Keri Lake

4.06 AVERAGE

My father once told me that space was a vacuous darkness, silent and cold and devoid of life. At the time, I remember thinking how frightening and lonely such a thing would be.
Yet, here I am.

This is probably one of the hardest reviews I had to write so far.
I cannot begin to convey everything that I went through while reading this book.

Keri Lake has been a favorite author of mine for a while now, but if I loved her work before, now I am completely and irrevocably in awe of her ability to write the most heartfelt and poignant story that while fictitious was able to feel so real for the similarities it shared with the way our world currently operates.

The world fell into chaos years ago when there was an outbreak of a virus that renders the victims Zombie like. Those infected by it are called Ragers and those that managed to avoid infection lived in hives.

If The Walking Dead, The Last of Us and World War Z had a baby, it would be this book, but far more darker and bleaker.
Dystopian stories aren't my go-to read solely for the fact that it comes way too close to reality, but if there's one thing I learned with this book is that Keri Lake can write anything and everything and I will inhale it then ask for more.

Despite how dark it is, Keri was able to balance it with the perfect dose of love, hope and a will to survive so strong that I could not help but admire such force.

This book follows Dani, Wren and Six.
These characters are infinitely complex, with so many layers to them. Once again Keri's ability to write is gleamed in the way she shed each layer from each character. Slowly but swiftly adding to the plot in the most unexpected ways.

Dani was plucked from her hive after witnessing the cruelty of her abductor and taken to Calico, a boys only facility that deals in human experimentation and there she must remain strong and steadfast in order to survive.

Don’t let this world eat you alive, Wren. It will, if you don’t keep your wits about you.

Wren is a young adult that resides in Szolen. A paradise for the pure and elite in a world that descended into chaos. Despite the security and seemingly safety Szolen provides, Wren is a restless creature that wishes to experience the world outside of the walls.
Six is a mute boy. He is a teenageer resident of Calico. Inside Calico, Six was forced to become a weapon against the Ragers.

Sometimes, I wish you could talk, Six. I wish you would say one word to me, just so I could hear your voice. But then you look at me, and I realize, I don’t need you to say anything, at all.

Wren and Six paths cross one day and their lives are irrevocably affected.

Two damaged souls trying to figure each other out.

Watching them get closer and developing raw and intense feelings for each other left me terribly anxious for the trials they would have to go through in order to survive, but at the same time it left a longing feeling deep in my soul to ever be able to experience such beautiful and overwhelming love.

Juniper Unraveling was not an easy read but I could not put it down even at the crack of dawn. Who needed sleep anyways?
This was the perfect foundation for what I believe will be my absolute favorite series.
It tells the story of love against all odds, it tells the story of grief, pain and struggle. This book tells the story of survival amidst the chaos and impossibilities.

Keri Lake pulled no punch while writing and delivered a story that is as raw and cruel at the same time as it is beautiful and tender.

If you are looking for a book that will make you feel and fear, this is the book you want to add to your TBR.

3.5

4.75 stars FOR ONE REASON ONLY : i could not make it 5 stars because i skimmed on some pages, mostly towards the beginning of the end which was fucking fantastic. Like the little calm before the storm moment.

This was so fucking good my heart hurts. Its dark. So dark. Shit happens to children on page.
Its set in a horrible horrible horrible world were some people are privileged and some are tortured. Of our two fmc’s Wren is among the privileged and Dani is among the tortured. The plot twist knocked the fucking wind out of me, i had a suspicion but fuck me man, with all my powers of deduction and my slightly toxic tendency of jumping to conclusions, I didnt even think of that. I gasped so hard i feel like dislocated my jaw.

Mixed feelings about our guy Dr. F, not sure if i hate him or not. But I certainly appreciate his little coup de grace at the end.

Dani. If someone more loyal and fierce ever excited, ive never met them. What she went through. Damn it man im gonna cry again

Welcome to Keri Lake dystopia style

Keri never seizes to amaze me with her beautiful, talented mind.

Keri Lake takes on dystopia genre with Juniper Unraveling and nails it. Juniper Unraveling is glittered with Keri’s signature dark romance and a strong love bond. Action and horror kept me at the edge of my seat.

Every new book by Keri Lake that I read I think “THIS is my favorite one!” So I gotta say it JUNIPER UNRAVELING IS MY FAVORITE KERI LAKE BOOK! But, but, but Soul Avenged was sooo good! And, and, and I LOVED Ricochet! Aaaarg!! Ripley!!! Ok, ok, I’m a Keri Lake fangirl.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

This is a dark, well written story. I'll pick it back up when I'm in the right headspace for it.
adventurous challenging dark emotional tense medium-paced

Totally captivated by this one! It took me a day or two to decide if I was in the mood to read this - but I should have known Keri was going to write an amazing dystopian novel that would absolutely hook my attention.

Without spoiling anything, essentially the plot is I am Legend meets Stranger Things but make it more violent and dark.

This dual POV is SO GOOD. It’s probably one of the best ones  I’ve read in a long while and the way they connect was utterly unexpected. I was so convinced it was one way, and was completely wrong!

Really love this one and would definitely recommend!

In a post apocalyptic world, where zombies are too close to being real, and a group of scientists and soldiers reign supreme as judge and jury, who are the real monsters? Can young love survive the harsh reality and brutality of this world?

Oh. My. Fuck. There is a lot to unpack here.

We start off with Dani and her baby brother forcefully being taken to a camp of sorts. Dani’s mother disguised her as a boy because they only take the males and kill the females. She somehow manages to go undiscovered for a while, and when she is rumbled, luckily it’s by a doctor who at least has some of his humanity in tact.

Of everything, and there is a lot of depressing and horrifying shit that goes down in this book, the thing that hit me the hardest was little Abel! Being separated from Dani like that and when he sees her again in the yard and just wants her to hold him but she can’t and he’s crying and he’s so sad and I’m rambling and I know he’s fictional but I JUST WANTED TO PROTECT THAT BABY BOY! Ugh my heartstrings.

Anywho - one emotional breakdown later - we also meet Wren. An 18 year old girl living in a compound with her father. One day she discovered a boy, or a man really, on the other side of a wall she shouldn’t be near. He’s clearly a prisoner, covered in scars and bruises, and totally mute. After feeling him through a hole for a few days she decides she can’t possibly leave him there, and so helps him break out. She knows him only as Six, and they embark on young love’s first journey - albeit in a dark as fuck world where they’ve both already endured terrible things in their short lives.

As usual I went in totally blind, and what a journey! I had my suspicions about a couple of things early on, and I was right, but holy shit did these people go through hell!

It was all so brutal and savage and sad. But there were such beautiful moments, especially between Wren and Six. Snippets of happiness and false peace. It made me hold on to those little rays of light as I read about all the other dark depravity.

The fact that I felt so strongly about each and every situation just proves how well written this whole book was. If you have any triggers I’d definitely recommend reading my warnings below because this is not an easy book to read. But it’s so worth it.

Potential triggers:
Rape
Sexual abuse
Child abuse
Murder
Torture
Captivity
Human testing

There’s probably a lot more than this but these were the main ones that sprung to mind.
