Tried to read this over the course of like three years but finally just decided it wasn’t worth finishing, so skim read the last hundred pages or so

4.5/5 stars!!! This book was pretty great overall. Lots of different outcomes that were possible. The ending wasn’t my favorite, but I’ve discovered I’m very hard to please when it comes to thriller endings

Well…this was something.

Things I liked
  • The writing style
  • The character Martina.
  • The story was engaging and entertaining, at least until the end.

Things I Disliked
  • The characters, bar Martina, because at least she had a personality. Everyone else was uninteresting and difficult to connect with.
  • The podcast intervals - they honestly didn’t add anything to the story and were really just a waste of words.
  • This book is not diverse at all. There’s one POC and they are represented very badly. I can’t say too much without spoiling, but seriously, just why? Also, it felt like tokenism. The way he talked about his experiences even sounded like what you’d expect from an older white woman/boomer…which the author is (I looked it up afterwards just to see if I was right). The addition of a random character with schizophrenia also felt odd? Like, this character was not important to the story at all, so you can’t say it’s representation, and it felt shoved in there for pity points. This happened with a few other identities/marginalised communities, too. I kinda feel like the author didn’t want to have to “be so inclusive and force rep” but shoved token characters in there so they couldn’t be accused of bigotry. Tbh, this specifically is what lowered my rating to 1.5 instead of 2.
  • The END. The plot twists were so predictable and made the ending anti-climatic. Like, come on?? I don’t read a lot of mysteries, but even I wasn’t shocked by them.
Apprently, Anna and Zoe being sisters was supposed to be a twist? I’d guessed that before I even began the book, from the blurb. In a book that’s not SFF, being sisters is the only logical conclusion for why they look so alike. I figured that was expected from the start. Secondly, the killer being Aster? Sure, I didn’t predict that, exactly, but it wasn’t at all surprising. I’d been on the edge of my seat wondering what had happened, and when this was revealed…let me just say I raised my eyebrows and waited for another better one. It didn’t come.
My immediate reaction was, “really? This is supposed to be a twist?” This is my biggest issue with the story because obviously shocking/good plot twists and endings are insanely important for thriller books. Again, I’m not a huge thriller or mystery reader, but I know that, and this did not reach that standard.

Overall, it’s safe to say that while the writing is fine from an objective standpoint and even engaging, I am extremely disappointed with just about everything else. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone and am shocked by all the 4/5 star ratings.

I was hooked after the first chapter! Im new to Kit Frick but I loved this book. The whole second half of the book was so hard to put down. I just kept wanting more. I never saw the plot twist coming with this one. It was a very gripping story but also turned out to be so heart breaking!!

Anna Cicconi nanny or murderer? While nannying in Herron Mills, Anna Cicconi confesses to the murder of Zoe Spanos. The only question is why?

Zoe Spanos has been missing since December 31st after leaving for a New Year's Eve party. It is a hot summer in Herron Mills when Anna Cicconi accepts a job as a nanny for the Bellamy family who live in their massive estate in the affluent town. While she is working as the nanny she finds out about Zoe's disappearance due to their uncanny resemblance to one another. As the summer goes on, Anna starts remembering things about Herron Mills and Zoe even though she is sure she's never met Zoe nor has she been to Herron Mills before then. Why is she having these memories and did she have something to do with Zoe's disappearance??

First of all, this story is loosely based on Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca. Next, the points of view are Anna in the past (the summer she nannied in Herron Mils), Anna in the present, and Martina in the present. We soon learn that Anna Cicconi confesses to accidentally killing Zoe Spanos. Readers quickly realize through Anna’s past that she is having serious issues with Deja Vu and that there are plenty of secrets waiting to be uncovered. Come along for a suspenseful tale of who done it. Perfect read for fans of Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
