Captain Amazing is starting to lose his edge. He's had a sidekick before, but things just didn't work out. Once again, he decides to audition for a new sidekick.
His pets, who want to spend more time with him, decide to try their hand at being superheroes. What could be cuter?
Adorable. My class is gonna love it. I brought it in today to show my students and they already started the wait list.
*** Update *** The kids at the top of the wait list were the subject of intense jealousy. The book has started to travel the classroom and is a big hit.

This is a fun, entertaining read about the household pets of a Captain Amazing. The pets feel neglected since their superhero owner is always out fighting crime, so when Captain Amazing decides its time to get a sidekick, they all hope to audition to get more attention. What follows is a fun series of antics with twists, turns and a lot of heart. Definitely appealing to younger readers with the animal and humor factor, while older readers will love the action.

Reminiscent of classic superhero comics, this graphic novel, by the creator of The Replacements, tells the story of Amazing Man's pets who decide to audition to be his sidekick. This will be a big hit with kids and adults alike.
In order to spend more time with Captain Amazing, his Pets cooperate and compete to be the sidekick their aging, super-powered owner needs.
Cute, funny, lovely art by a Caldecott-winning illustrator, this centers around the theme of what makes a family.
There are VERY few non-male characters in this book, with maybe 3 lines actually being spoken by women, so not a very balanced portrayal.

I'm giving this five stars because my (just turned nine and has been a reluctant reader until the last few months) son read the whole thing in one sitting, reread it, on his third reading asked if he could keep reading while he ate lunch, and is now reading it again. He also asked if we can get a copy for his own since this has to go back to the library.
Adorable tale of superheroes, family, and redemption.
7 yr old liked this a lot; it was not for me, but I could see the appeal.

Finally, I get to a “traditional” graphic novel, i.e., a superhero story. It may be traditional, but there’s nothing conventional about Dan Santat’s Sidekicks, the story of a superhero and his super sidekicks, even the ones he doesn’t know about. Sidekicks tells the tale of Captain Amazing, who’s getting a little long in the tooth. He decides it’s time for a new sidekick, and his pets Roscoe (a dog), Fluffy (a hamster) and Shifty (a chameleon) are up for the challenge. They practice in secret, with the begrudging help of Manny, aka Static Cat, who was Captain Amazing’s old partner and pet before he ran away. Sidekicks has all the tellings of a great superhero legend. It’s the classic origin story of how the gang got together and learned how to use their superpowers. There’s lots of first rate action and witty dialogue and characters you can really get behind. Who doesn’t want to root for little Fluffy in his red, white and blue bedecked costume when he hits the streets to fight crime? I certainly hope this is only the first in a long line of Sidekicks stories. There’s a whole wide world of superhero mythos to plumb, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for our heroes.
