I acquired this from when my college had assigned a class to read it, and I’m glad to have read it. Such an important topic to discuss, and people like me certainly need to continue educating themselves as we see debates about critical race theory, police brutality, and the toll it all takes on Black individuals. I will say that some of the writing made this book powerful but I had to reread as I couldn’t fully understand the points being said. So that makes it an important read for school settings. I’m happy to have gotten a copy!

Some of the most beautiful writing I’ve ever read.

just when i thought i had found a book that could distract me from all the french people in my life, the author goes to france

What an intimate and heart-wrenching letter from a truly incredible writer. I listened to the audiobook, read by the author, and I think it is the best way to experience this work. This is such a deeply personal glimpse into the black experience in America. I can't imagine living under the fear, carrying the history of disembodiment, and having to continue to grapple with the rampant racism and casteism that is ever present in our country. I'm grateful for voices like Ta-Nehisi Coates' to share their experience first hand, and we must listen.

A beautifully written letter from Coates to his son. The writing was stark and lovely, but the book made me feel a little despondent, wondering if things can ever truly change.

Beautifully written, compelling, and thoughtful. I felt like a fortunate intruder reading Coates’s letter to his son. I’ll have to spend more time digesting this one, as a “person who believes she is white”. The book isn’t a call to action but a call for reflection.
