Although this book was unbearable at times due to the whiny nature of the main character Werther, I couldn’t help but sympathize with the pain that his destiny brought upon him. It’s truly tragic, which is why I feel like I have to appreciate it for what it is.
The pioneer-book of the modern depressed characters.

This was dreadful.
I absolutely detest novels where I’m supposed to feel sorry for stupid characters who cause all their own problems. Young Werther is one of those characters who you just want to slap right across the face. I couldn’t stand the pathetic little weed. If I felt sorry for anybody, it was Wilhelm for having to read so many tiresome letters from this insipid moron.
To summarise:
1. Pathetic weed falls in love with the first pretty girl who will dance with him
2. He proceeds to stalk this woman after learning that she is engaged, and therefore not interested in him
3. He torments himself until
The first literary incel and stalker? Perhaps. Great tragic novel? Absolutely not.

Though I absolutely LOVED Goethe's prose, I did not particularly care for the self-centered Werther. Yes, I say self-centered. He only cared about his happiness and no one else's; otherwise, why would he make the decision he makes at the end of this book. Hell, I kinda hated him for it.
