Was this book a good idea to read after 9 months of a pandemic? Probably not. Was this book funny, fast-paced, and I can absolutely see it being made into a movie? Yes.

A few plot holes, and a little unsettling because I’m an idiot who’s like “pandemic? I know some books for that”, but a great change of pace for me.

Quirky, creepy, and in a constant state of motion. This was a quick read - probably could have been done in one sitting but when fungi try to take over the world I get a little skeptical on time of day to be read.
Ultimately it was actually pretty funny, the last 1/2 flew as it was much more banter between characters than the news of the world actually happening.

Definitely a worth a read, excellent if you find yourself in a slump.

This was a fun ride! Koepp is definitely a world-class screenwriter--the pacing doesn't let up, all of our main characters have great voice, and I bought into the plot rather than get caught up nitpicking ala MST3000.
Rule of cool definitely applies--this is the man who wrote the script for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, after all, even if Spielberg says he's to blame for the "nuke the fridge" scene.

THAT SAID. The damn jacket art. It looks moody, intense, serious. Lovely use of pearlescent stock. I wasted some time at the beginning of the book readjusting my expectations from something introspective, oppressive, upmarket-literary-crossover whathaveyou to what this really is, which is a fungus-zombie thriller. Not quite a Shaun of the Dead, but more that than The Last of Us. (No, I don't always read flap copy. Or blurbs. I probably could have picked up on the Andy Weir comparison. My apologies to all the editorial assistants out there.)

Cold storage was a classic thriller. Fun. Hilarious. Tense. Sometimes terrifying and gruesome, but genuinely entertaining. The style of writing with the omnipotent narrator at times worked, like when it was the POV of the fungus, but other times, it was giving unnecessary background information.

For me, the only major issue I had was the pacing. The book would be really tense, and then it would fall off. Rinse and repeat. It didn't have any kind of consistency. It didn't slowly build and then slowly fall. It was like a cliff. It kind of messed with the heart-stopping feeling, the worry you're feeling.

Half action-thriller and half creature feature, Cold Storage stands as an absolute page-turner of entertainment. The novel is not perfect: location spacing can feel a bit difficult to imagine, and some aspects of the plot do feel a bit contrived, over-the-top, and belief-stretching. However, as for the last concern, solid science-fiction will always root the reader in reality while slightly coaxing the mind beyond the outer limits of rationality. The character set is healthily varied, humor (while not as dark as some may claim) is refreshingly sprinkled throughout, and the narrative pull is unrelenting. David Koepp has crafted a story that reads like a classic screenplay in novel form. Don't start this book unless the rest of the day or weekend is available to finish it!

This was pure fun. I loved the story. The characters were well rounded and relatable. There was so much humanity, and so much truth buried in a fun plausible sci-fi story. I very much enjoyed the storytelling technique. I recommend this book it's a fun quick read.
