BRIEF SYNOPSIS: Andrea always thought she knew everything about her mom Laura. Until a gunman opens fire in a mall restaurant and Laura kills him. Laura gives Andrea even more questions when she gives her the keys to a storage unit and tells her not to come back until Laura calls. As Andrea begins traveling across the United States, she begins searching for answers as to who her mother really is.

I picked this as a BOTM March add-on (there were so many good books in March) and honestly mainly picked it because it was over 400 pages and would get me my page-pusher bag in my BOTM challenge. This book took me a while to get into but man then it hooked me. The book goes back and forth between two alternating time periods. This story really wasn’t what I was expecting at all and I really enjoyed it.

I know this is a Netflix series and I have not watched the series. I did look up differences and I do think that there are a few major differences between the book and the series. If you liked the series then I would definitely consider reading the book. It is pretty long, but I thought it was well worth it.

4⭐️

There is something about a woman whose past is evil, but whose child’s presence makes her present good that makes an incredible premise for a thriller. I adored the fact that the main character is not made out to be perfect, but a ying-yang of both good and evil. This made me respect her more. Her humanity coupled with her mama bear ferocity kept me at the edge of my seat throughout this book.

Wow, Karin Slaughter really is That Bitch.

I really loved the two perspectives of this novel and how the two female leads discovered who they wanted to be along the way.

Absolutely fabulous as always. Karin Slaughters books never disappoint, and this one is absolutely fantastic!!

This might be the only Karin Slaughter novel I wouldn’t recommend. I’m confused that it’s the one becoming a series. It was convoluted and the characters were annoying if not entirely forgettable. But still worth the read for Slaughter’s writing which, even if you aren’t enjoying the plot, will keep you there until the end

I really like Slaughter’s craft—she employs incredible use of suspense and pays attention to details. This is a good one.

I’ve read a few novels by Karin Slaughter but this was by far the one that kept me hooked, right from the first page. The storyline was well written.

Actual rating 3.5 Stars

I decided to read this book after seeing a short clip of the Netflix movie on social media. As a result of this I could almost see the characters in my mind as I read the words on the page.

It was interesting jumping between the present and the past with each chapter as the book went on.

I enjoyed meeting some of the past characters in the present and finding out how they changed the direction of the main players.

A good read which kept me guessing.
dark mysterious tense fast-paced

This was my first-time reading Karin Slaughter, and I may read some of her back list. Nick and Paula's narrations are what you'd expect from a cult leader and a devoted follower. At times, it seemed like Andrea put herself into situations that were convenient for the plot. The epilogue could have been a little shorter and said the same thing.
