This book definitely kept me on the edge of my seat! Although it was frustrating in the moment of reading I liked that they didn’t make Andy a perfect MC, she makes lots of mistakes and freezes in terrifying situations.
I understand Paula is crazy but I was hoping for a bit of redemption at the middle… but then the end and the last few flashbacks happened. Why were Lauren’s final words to her about them fighting over their literal cult leader?
I did LOVE the epilogue (the reason i bumped from 3 to 3.75) and how she stood up to him and was proud of who she was.
My biggest gripe is that it took me a few tries and chapters to get into the story, but once I got there it was hard to put down.

Man, this was AWFUL.
1. it was like reading two different loosely related books in one.
2. The initial action wound up not having anything to do with what the book was about.
3. Andy, who seems to be the main character, soon becomes a supporting character and an afterthought.
4. The random cast of characters from her mother’s past life. What?!
5. If I never hear the words “my darling,” “my love,” “Christ!,” and “dumb bitch” again, it’ll be too soon.
So bad. Why was this published?

Decent. I read the second book in the series first by accident and loved it and had the same expectations with this book but unfortunately this book was not as good. The chapters were too long and too intense to flip back and forth from the past to the present. Every time the time changed I had to go back to the previous chapter from that time to refresh my memory. It was a lot of information, names, etc that made it difficult to follow at times. But a good book overall.

I found this book completely addictive. Even at almost 500 pages, which I don’t read that length often, I couldn’t walk away and found myself reading so quickly. It was tightly written and expertly plotted so that there were no loose ends, and enough pieces to continually keep you engaged while trying to place them.
I have heard this is different from her normal plot lines. If I was this consumed by something that is not her normal genre then I can’t wait to read her really in her element.

slow-paced
I was pretty intrigued by this book by the end of the first chapter, and thought it had a lot of potential. But it kind of fell off a little for me as the story progressed.
My main issues with it is that it was so slow paced and the constant cuts to the past became a bit convoluted at times. I get that it explains what happened but I think it was a bit choppy and could have been written in an easier way to follow. It also felt like the author was trying to hit every single theme possible, but I don’t want to give anything away for spoilers!
There were just some really strange choices made by the characters in this book

The story was interesting and different but a lot of background to be told that didn’t really stay with the thriller/suspense of the book
