I feel like at around the halfway point or so, this plot just went over my head. I listened to the audiobook and had to listen to chapters over and over to make sure I could wrap my head around what was going on. There were important details throughout the book that were integral to the plot so you really have to be sure not to miss them. Overall I liked the story, I just feel it was a bit all over the place. It was also realllyyyyy long. At times it felt like a slog.
Enjoyable. Good twists and turns. The pacing changed towards the end and was a little distracting; I thought it made the end feel very different than the rest of the novel. But overall, a good story.
“She had dozens, even hundreds, of friends, but not one single person knew all of the pieces of her.”
I loved this one. The audio was a great way to enjoy it and the fact that I got through all of it in one day. I listened as I ran errands and cleaned - I just didn't want to stop the story. I can't imagine Andy's confusion at not knowing who her mother was and slowly learning new pieces of her. I liked the way the past chapters slowly helped us learn how things had played out and what had defined their lives so much. I liked the wild road trip and adventure of the story and the strength of the women in it. I'm so glad I finally got to this one before the show airs on Netflix.

This one was a bit of a struggle for me to stick with. The whole story became so far-fetched while also being predictable. And the main character was supposedly 30-something? She seemed more like some oblivious idiot teenager. Also a lot of little mysteries in the beginning half— the inaccuracies in Andy’s birthday, age, spelling of her middle name— never get answered. Also the tirade about “birth dad and birth grandparents” was super cringey. Biological? Paternal?
Eventually I was able to just fall into the story and enjoy it for what it was.

Overall, this was a really good book. It started off with a bang, literally. However, there were parts of the book that really dragged.
Pros:
Well developed storyline & characters
Writing style
Suspense
Level of detail
Cons:
Inconsistency - some parts dragged; others were page turners
Characters - while they were well-developed, a couple of characters were irritating (Andrea - weak and makes really stupid decisions) and not consistent (Laura - is she a warrior or an easily manipulated & needy girlfriend?). The other characters were decent, but the use of code names was tedious & a little confusing at times.

DNF - I cannot believe this is a Karin Slaughter book! It was sooo boring. The first part with the shooting was ok, but it quickly got tiresome what with switching to a totally snooze worthy economics panel then when it switched back to the vaguely interesting plot line there is a random hookup between the main character and a character who just shows up miles away from where we saw him last with no explanation other than she just happened to run into him in this town she only chose because she was exhausted. How is that plausible?? Anyway that’s where I gave up.
DNF - I highly recommend this authors Grant County and Will Trent series but do yourself a solid and skip this one.
