The Identicals

Elin Hilderbrand

3.72 AVERAGE

These twin sisters are a rush! They’re more different than you can imagine identical twins to be, probably due to the fact that they were separated during their teen years and lived with a different parent. Each twin really takes after the parent they lived with. It brings up a lot of internal questions about nature vs. nurture, but that’s a whole different thought process!

The setup of this novel was different. Rather than chapters, there are sections dedicated to Harper and Tabitha (the twins) and Tabitha’s daughter Ainsley. There are even chapters dedicated to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, two completely different islands that are only 11 miles apart.

At first, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this book. I’m usually into suspenseful thrillers, something with a lot of twists and turns and action. But in the end, I realized that it was just what I needed to take a break from all that action. It’s the perfect beach read! It’s refreshing and surprising, albeit a bit predictable at times, but its predictability isn’t debilitating to the storyline.

Overall, love Love LOVED this beach read. I did manage to get down to the Jersey Shore to read it while on the beach, and that exemplified the story for me even more. I would DEFINITELY recommend this novel for anyone who loves good family drama.

I needed a beachy read, and this one sort of delivered. It’s the story of 39-year-old twins who live on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, and of course they are both very different and of course there are family misunderstandings that cause strife. I didn’t even see a beach until about halfway through the book. Every minor character has a huge backstory. And babies and motherhood fix everything.

I keep reading Hilderbrand’s books because they keep coming up as good beach reads; however, I think I keep picking the wrong ones because they don’t ring my bell like they should. I liked The Island, and I abandoned A Summer Affair. There is a dog in the story. If you’re like me, you’ll want to know if the dog lives.
SpoilerNot only does the dog live, but he even ‘narrates’ the epilogue!
This would have been 2.5 stars, but because Goodreads only allows full star ratings, it’s a three.

In comparison to her other books this one is very bland. It was not entirely a beachy read.. just family drama with a quick, unexpected resolution.

Another good summer beach read from Hildebrand, this novel alternates between the usual setting of Nantucket, with Martha's Vineyard. Tabitha and Harper are identical twins, separated when their parents divorced and decided Tabitha would stay with her uptight, snobby mother, Eleanor, while Harper stayed with her down to earth father, Billy. Completely different personalities, they stopped talking for years but are reunited at their father's death. Tabitha's daughter, Ainsley, adds to the dysfunction of this family, as each twin has a story that unfolds.

This was a light and easy read - perfect for the beach. It was predictable and far fetched at times - but it is a great escape from everyday life.

Overall I liked the storyline and the characters themselves. I liked the writing too!  But this book was pretty long for what the storyline was -- I felt like there was so much information at some points that the actual story got lost on my a few times.

Fun, quick “beach read” that’s really made for the Hallmark channel: twin sisters, a little drama, a few love connections, and a grossly simplified happy ending! As someone who dreams of vacationing in New England, I loved the dual settings of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard which felt like characters in the book. Hildebrand’s descriptions of each was a sensory delight!

Must visit Nantucket. Such a good summer beach read. I didn’t know what to expect from Elin Hilderbrand books because I have heard so many mixed reviews. But, it exceeded my expectations. Beautifully talked about tough subjects in a way I haven’t read before. I felt like I was watching one of those feel good tv shows. She just might be my feel good author. I want to read all of her books now.
