This book was a nice little read. I think because I have studied the context as well for education purposes, it makes a lot of the reputation and cave-man/animalistic references and descriptions a lot more impactful. When considering the effect this would have had on a Victorian audience, the story and the message becomes a lot more powerful. I liked Stevenson's writing, even though at parts there were a lot of dated words and phrases that made me struggle to keep reading. The descriptions of Mr Hyde create an intense, grotesque image in your head and it truly contrasts with Dr Jekyll and the innocence of the victims of his anger.
dark mysterious

Hoped to enjoy it more upon a reread than I did at school - mission accomplished. More vivid, fervent passages on the duality of man than I remember.

Interestingly, I always thought Jekyll had a multiple personality disorder, not that he literally and physically turned into another person!

“You must suffer me to go my own dark way.”

Not bad, although I didn’t like the way that it was all explained away at the end by a letter.

Though I knew the story, I had never actually read it. I can imagine as a first time reader it would have been quite suspenseful.

This book is certainly a product of its time. If not for being a classic, with such an outstanding and lasting literary legacy I would have rated it lower. I still think the Arthur song is incredible, however the original text does not uphold this thesis.

3.5

Robert Louis Stevenson's stories in this collection all carry a similar theme of good vs evil and how each man has the ability to act wrongly but how every man will in fact feel guilt and wish to find the good in himself again. I like "The Bottle Imp" best.
