Yay Happy Ending!! Haha not. Though this book does end with happiness and love, the third book makes everything harder on them (and I only read the description of it). I may be mad about a book I haven't read yet but I will still read it. This author is one of the best, she captivates you with the thrilling story of the life of a girl that is half lived on land and can half live in water. It is unlike anything I have ever read before and cannot wait to see what happens next!

This book starts off with bang. With Emma's mother's true identity revealed, they are on the run from the Syrena. Naila believes She's about to be put into prison for fleeing her underwater home. She doesn't understand that Galen's brother Grom is still alive and wants her back. Once they reunite, it's not an easy road. Jagen and Paca are the main instigators in a kingdom-wide uprising. It will be up to Emma to show the Syrena what the true gift of Poseidon is. I loved Of Poseidon--original concept for me, great writing, cool characters. I loved how Emma really had a chance to shine in this book.

Bottom-line: It's time to grab your diving gear and head under the sea!

As you can probably tell from my review of [b:Of Poseidon|12425532|Of Poseidon (The Syrena Legacy, #1)|Anna Banks|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327879889s/12425532.jpg|17375535], I was... well, I was not a fan. Unfortunately, I have a problem with dnf-ing series (especially after I dnf-ed three earlier this year and continued a few I wasn't sure of that ended up improving greatly by the second book) Plus, these covers are beautiful and I have a lot of time and not many things to read this month (because all the books I would have read are books I'm getting for my birthday. Long story.) Wow, I'm making a lot of excuses. Anyway the important part of this incoherent rambling is that when I rate a book 2 stars, whether or not I complete the series is completely random.

And I happened to keep on reading this one.

And it happened to get a little better. Key word, little. I still don't really like Emma, but she was given a little more independence this time. I still don't like Galen (at all) but he was a little less controlling this time. I still don't like the Toraf/Rayna pairing, but the question of "If she didn't end up liking him, would she still have been forced to mate with him?" was at least brought up. Actually, a lot of the problems I had with the first book were at least brought up. (Toraf/Rayna, Galen's controlling attitude, etc.) Awareness is the first step towards a solution.

But it isn't everything.

There were still things in this book that were problematic for me. For example, Galen and Toraf were both extremely controlling of their girlfriends. Also, Galen got mad at Emma for things that were (at least, in my eyes) fairly small, and she didn't ever call him out on that. I don't see these relationships as healthy.

Which is why I was happy that this plot focused more on Syrena politics, and less on Emma's and Galen's relationship. I was happiest when they were apart, because then I didn't have to suffer through ill-timed cuddling and kissing (by the way, it's like they have no possible way of telling when it's appropriate to canoodle and when it's not) but at least the amount of time spent on their relationship was limited.

The writing style also still bothered me. It was very simple. And it was present tense. I don't like present tense, it makes things feel really awkward. Although, I came to appreciate the switch between Emma's first person narrative and Galen's third person narrative. It felt a lot more necessary in Of Triton than it did in Of Poseidon.

Overall, it was an improvement from the first book (enough that I felt it deserved an extra star) but it still needed work. If you didn't like Of Poseidon, don't read Of Triton. It's not that much better.

Update: 9/18/14
I won't be continuing with the series. I really wanted to, especially because these books are so pretty and I wanted them all on my shelves. But I just can't. I didn't like them enough to justify spending the money on the third one. I have too many other books to buy and read.

5 stars because I've always been mesmerized with this world and I always will be..
So many unexpected events happened in this book. TOO MANY.
A tear was shred at that ending..
I felt like I was dealing with some falling government and I was trying to make the law better.
I'm so happy the romance played a smaller part in this book because I felt I needed that, even though I love the romance.

its been sm fun revisiting this series

also the mom??? such a terrible mom LOL

I genuinely feel like this book could have been cut down in size and either added to the first book or added to the third. I know at the time this book was published it was very standard for authors to have a deal to write a trilogy. In this case I feel it would have been beneficial for it to be made into a duology, mainly due to pacing and plot.

The first 50 pages of this book are rather useless. After the cliffhanger ending of the first book we are led on a bit of a wild goose chase that essentially leads to nothing plot wise. It’s a case of using misunderstandings to further the plot and all it takes is one simple conversation to explain away the issues that are prevalent. Since the whole drama of the first book is already buttoned down and taken care of the story looses some of the appeal. I feel like the first 50 pages was more or less the author wanting or needing to write a longer book (since this one is nearly 70 pages shorter than the first one). It was all just unnecessary filler that added nothing to the plot or added character development in anyway.

After the first 50-70 pages had passed I was willing to see what else was left in the plot; lots of passage of time, no one goes to school, Syrena political parties, a mustache twirling villain, and perceived betrayal. Honestly, I think I was most let down by the climax. It was incredibly rushed (set up and taken apart in less than 30 pages), and left open for any possible thing to set up the next book. I need more concrete endings and plots in order to really feel like I got what I came for.

There was barely any character development from either Emma or Galen. They still remain twitterpated lovers who aren’t allowed to show affection until it’s granted them. The only person who I really felt grew on an emotional level was Rayna. She went from being so petulant that a teenager would be envious, to being someone who was selfless and wanted to help Emma. I can only hope in the third installment we see more growth from all of the characters as they continue on this journey.
