Though I gave them the same rating, I preferred this book to the first one.

I was expecting more from the climax it wasn't as intense as I expected, but still was good.

I really liked all of the characters, I ship Akos & Cyra so much.

Akos makes really bad life decisions for the majority of this novel TBH.

Pacing was good.

Ending was beautiful and didn't murder me the way I expected it to.

But really Akos, get it together!

I love this duology, I love it with everything I have. The second time reading it is even better. I can now appreciate Akos and Cyra, how they both hurt, made mistakes and failed spectacularly at times. But also both deserve mercy and a little acknowledgement because they are fierce, strong and handle pain in a way that is right for them.
This duology altered my way of thinking, my sense of books and my love for reading. I do not know a better way to describe why I will give it five stars every time.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF at 50%. Just did not feel right. I did not love the characters like I did in the first book, the story was not believable because of too many contradictions and it was just boring.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY SO WELL WRITTEN!!!! I flew through this. It was so well developed and interesting the whole time. You really felt what the characters where feeling and everything was so well described that you really felt apart of their world. This is absolutely one of my favorite books. V. Roth has grown so much as an author I’m excited to see where she goes next!

DNF’g at 2/3 complete - I got to the beginning of part 4. I may pick it up again to finish it at some point to find out what happens in the end.

I was reading a Cisi chapter last night but found myself not caring and bored about what was happening in the plot. Not a good sign. Imo, the plot gets bogged down by too much political machinations between the planets and the oracles.

The world that Veronica Roth created in this duology is kind of interesting. The sci-fi vibe with the currentgifts and the marks carved into the people as reminders were pretty creative.

I hope Chosen Ones is better than Carve the Mark and The Fates Divide. Roth is a great writer, but I didn’t really connect with this one.

As I came late to the Veronica Roth party, I began with Carve the Mark, which I enjoyed immensely, and then started on the Divergent series while waiting for Fates' release. I think this duology is much stronger writing than Divergent. Fans of that may not care for these books as much because while Divergent is a clear-cut dystopian YA, these books are flirting with, if not clearly jumping into the sci-fi genre.

Fates is, at heart, the story of Akos and Cyra, but many new or secondary characters step forward here to ask some of the big questions about revenge, mercy, and sacrifice. The choices that Akos, in particular, has to make, would seem to lead him to a clearer understanding of his mother, yet don't. It's another example of Roth not going for the easy answers. An engrossing book told from many perspectives that stitch together an amazing universe that feels like something brand new.
