Keeper Chronicles by JA Andrews starts off well and gets better by the book.
The style reminds me of classic fantasy, but with a fresh tone and voice to it, and not as predictable as a lot of the older books are.
The best comparison in my eyes are the Riyria books by Michael J Sullivan, as Andrews also managed to write books that are definitely meant for an adult audience, and have high stakes, but don't need graphic gore or sex scenes to accomplish that.
The focus is on how things like war affect the characters instead of the actual wounds. So while there is plenty of action and fighting, it's not at all a grimdark story.
There's death and sorrow in these books, but there's plenty of light and hope to balance it. So you end up with an epic fantasy that is quite a rollercoaster of a story, but in the end leaves you feeling good and well entertained, even if it's not all roses and sunshine, and not everyone makes it to the end.
I love these characters and the banter and friendships between them! So I wholeheartedly recommend this series.
PS the audio bundle is freaking brilliant!

I absolutely adored these books! I demolished them. I am not always one for a series but as this was only three (usually my limit) I gave it a chance and I'm so glad I did. Though each book is a continuation of the story each focuses on an entirely different character and set of challenges in a way I haven't read before. I was so enamored with each of the protagonists and their cast of characters for completely different reasons but Andrews did an superb job building both this world and these characters and flushing out their truths, fears and motivations.
For anyone looking for some good entertaining fantasy I give this trilogy a huge thumbs up!

I need a separate rating system for different kinds of books. ;-) For me, 5 stars is life-changing, and not a lot of fiction books can do that for me.
But having said that, 4 stars for me is a great read for fiction! This trilogy is fabulous in its world-construction, magic system, the depth and variety of characters, and the way the three stories blend together into one larger sweep while moving from one character as the main focus to another.
Often with a trilogy, I'm not motivated to just keep going. I takes breaks to read other things and get a bit of a "rest" before carrying on. It just feels like too much of one thing to commit to. But with this set, I moved on from one to the next without a break, not because of being tricked by cliffhangers (cheap trick IMHO), which this author doesn't do, but because I wanted to stay with these people and this world a bit longer.
Looking forward to her next trilogy - I've put off starting the [b:Dragon's Reach|53283967|Dragon's Reach (The Keeper Origins, #1)|J.A. Truly epic fantasy that I absolutely fell in love with. The jolt and slight disappointment of starting each book focusing on a different character is swiftly forgotten, and the three books work really well together. What a fantastic tale, and brilliant audiobook narration too.
