My daughter lent me this book. I read it in two sittings and thoroughly enjoyed it. I like authors who write using terse prose and in a simple style and yet who at the same time can say so much. Wingman does this really well.
The novel is so atmospheric. She manages to convey the essence of her settings so well - Oxford, Provence, London. The theme centring on the enduring bond between the two male and then one female character is done masterfully and with such empathy. The reader's journey through this book is emotionally taxing and yet so worthwhile and enjoyable.

Every line of this book read as poetry. Written as short stories that weave between Ellis and Michel. Two boys growing up in Oxford in the 1950s. We learn of their relationship between each other and sense how time did little to dampen how they feel for each other. Their alternating tales share a theme, love is an unbroken bond. Beautifully written.

I don't really know how to describe this one. Melancholic? Atmospheric? Literary fiction at it's most literally fictitious? This probably would have been more like 2 stars for me if not for these two redemptive qualities:
1) The continual quoting of Walt Whitman. O Captain, my Captain! I'm a sucker for Leaves of Grass.
2) A few key moments early on in the novel that focused on Ellis and Michael's relationships with Ellis's mom. "... everything she held on to and everything she believed in came together in that unexpected moment. The simple belief that men and boys were capable of beautiful things."

Oldukça duygusal bir kitaptı. Başı karmaşık gibi başlasa da sonrasında çok güzel kendini toparladı. Kitabın hem van gogh vurgusunu hem de karakterler arasında olan saf sevgi anlatımını çok sevdim.
