Liked it more than I thought I would. Goodreads reviews are wild, as always.

I liked the main characters, I thought the family and relationship dynamic was really interesting, and the ways grief and guilt and love and hatred converged made for a rich backstory. The terror/supernatural element pulled, in my opinion, from way too common places. The nursery rhymes, the black eyes, the disembodied giggles, the evil children speaking sweetly. I feel like I've seen that a thousand times, and I don't really read a lot of horror. But it was effective, it was very creepy, and the tension at the end really got me.

All in all pretty enjoyable!

3.5!
Don’t let my rating deter you. There’s lots to enjoy here!

Reeling from the loss of a child, Rachel Kennan lands in a small town as a police chief. Her 14 year marriage is on the rocks and her 2 daughter are all that’s keeping it together.

I liked the idea of this story and I liked the creepy kids aspect. I didn’t like the toxic husband/wife relationship. I understand how it helped the story but it was triggering for me and I couldn’t get passed it. I would’ve loved to had more world building about the town, the woods, and the families there.

Overall, the story is spooky and unsettling. A solid debut and I look forward to more from this author.

Nowhere was a book that hooked me almost immediately. The story was extremely unique and gripping and I truly felt the horor elements leaping from the pages as I made my way through this book. There were some truly emotional chapters throughout this one that dealt with loss and abandonment and at times I could really feel the pain these characters were going through. For a horror novel, the emotional elements were quite surprising but that's what made this story such a unique one. 75 percent of the way through, this was a surefire 5 star read but towards the end I felt the story kinda went off the rails in such a farfetched direction that I was a bit turned off by that. Overall though, this was a very enjoyable read. One that's deserving of the hype it's now receiving.
