This March debut novel was so good that I flew right through it!

Rachel Kennan is the police chief of a small rural town in Appalachia that is full of drugs, guns, and worse but she would rather be dealing with that then her husband, Finn, an alcoholic who caused the death of their son in a car accident the year before.
When a heinous crime is discovered in the woods nearby and a few local teens and children go missing, Rachel dives right into investigating but soon finds that there is something supernatural going on and she may not be able to stop it.

This was just the right combination of crime, mystery, horror, and thriller, with spooky supernatural folklore elements and modern social commentary (MC is bisexual in an overly religious area). The characters are all extremely flawed and unlovable (even the children) but it really adds to the tension.

A very strong weaving of personal conflicts and the primary force driving the story.  The story picks a pace and accelerates at that rate the entire time, never letting up until you finish the last page.

Very creepy! Took me so long because I couldn’t read it at night because I was too creeped out! 😆 not sure how I feel about the ending but I could tell it was going in that direction by the middle of the book, so I wasn’t surprised. Would have totally given it 5 stars otherwise though!

Holy crap! This debut was insanely good!

If you like Appalachian folklore, queer stories, eerie stories, suspense, and books that keep you on your toes- THIS IS FOR YOU!

I was hooked from the absolute beginning. I was craving a thriller that I could immerse myself entirely in. This was everything I needed and more! I highly recommend adding this one to your TBR if you haven’t already!

Thank you Atria and NetGalley for the ARC!

Well this is one of my most shocking ratings. While I love a solid murder mystery of any kind I’m not usually drawn to books with monsters or demons or any of that. But this author did magic and pulled me in the more I read. I’m not sure it’s a usual 5 star for me but for the writing alone and the fact I finished it and couldn’t put it down in the last quarter of it it’s where I landed! Slow start with a solid ending. Horror film in the making I predict!

A super tense read, I was on the edge from the start to the end. Interesting, messy characters, small town mystery, creepy children, disturbing.
