i think - and judging by my live texts to my best friend - i spent the first maybe thirty chapters going "what the ****" is going on?" it felt like a really slow build, or just confusing, and i can't remember if that's how the first book felt, just so fairytale like and easy to get lost in while not really understanding what's going on, waiting for the pieces to fit together. i think part of my confusion lies in the fact that i read the hazel wood over a year ago, and so my memory of the characters were a little hazy. i was so sure that it wouldn't be resolved by the end, but it did and i enjoyed the resolution.

I really loved the first book, but I was disappointed by this one... sadly, I think this sequel was not necessary ... ☹️

This was a good book.
I enjoyed every single minute of it.
If there's one thing that i slightly disliked, it's the fact that Alice and Finch had so little time together in this book. But the ending totally made up for it.

I never thought that I liked the Urban Fantasy genre — that is until I found Kevin Hearne and Melissa Albert.
From the Publisher:
The New York Times bestselling sequel to Melissa Albert’s beloved The Hazel Wood! In The Night Country, Alice Proserpine dives back into a menacing, mesmerizing world of dark fairy tales and hidden doors of The Hazel Wood. Follow her and Ellery Finch as they learn The Hazel Wood was just the beginning, and that worlds die not with a whimper, but a bang.

The first chapter describes not 1 but 2 sexual assaults. It’s kissing without consent by 2 separate people (one who is supposed to be her friend) If this is how the book starts, I have no interest in the rest.
Graphic: Sexual assault, Toxic friendship
