This reminded me why I adore Cardan so much. It was amazing.

This was SO cute. I am veritably obsessed with the art style, and I loved how the story motif was so reminiscent of fairytales. Could have done without some of the previous plot retreads, but I’m kicking myself for not reading this sooner.

This was everything a novella should be. A break in the main story that gives the reader more insight to a character they haven’t spent much time with yet and just a fun story to read. I loved the illustrations too - I’m always wishing we could get a few illustrations in fantasy books to be able to have a mental image of the characters / settings without having to google fanart and then see a massive spoiler

i still can’t get over the fact that cardan and jude have canonically watched knives out 😭 that’s so goated

but fr- this book was really interesting,, and i love cardan‘s point of view. i just wish that this book was way longer and included more scenes from the original trilogy. i would have especially wanted to see them include the scenes where (spoilers for the original trilogy!)
he’s talking to jude for the first time since she’s returned from exile, the whole night of his family’s murder at the coronation, him endearing himself to the court of shadows that night while jude was asleep, what he was doing while jude was in the undersea, what he was up to during her exile + him writing those letters to her, or even him as a kid in a scene with his mom!
because i get not including that dual pov from the start in the trilogy, but now that we don’t need to keep the element of surprise that perspective could have been really great here.

but i’ll appreciate this book for what it is as well, because i still think it was good regardless.

The illustrations added so much to this story. Really a fun quick read
