In a time where we slowly chip away at women's rights, this story is ever more poignant and relevant.
The pacing flatlined for me a bit for some stretches in the middle, but if the time was not taken to expand on these character's and their individual circumstances and struggles the end may not have had the same impact.
For Grady Hendrix fans, this is a no-brainer - read this book!

Tohle bylo moje první setkání s Gradym Hendrixem, ale musím říct, že jsem dost spokojená :0. Měla jsem chuť na hororové čtení, estetiku a atmosféru 70. nebo 80. let. A kniha mi všechno tohle dala.
Ačkoliv je román protknutý také fantasy zápletkou ve formě čarodějnictví a obětí, které toto "řemeslo" vyžaduje, největším hororem pro mě coby čtenáře bylo téma domovů, do nichž byly odváženy dívky, které otěhotněly mimo manželství. Místy byl text fakt surový, temný a děsivý. Na nikoho nebral ohledy, informace prezentoval suše a drsně, ale tak dobře, že to na mě udělalo velký dojem.
Sice mi přišlo prvních 70 stran trochu pomalejších, ale teď mi to vlastně nevadí. Mám pocit, že jsem četla hutný příběh, kde se taky ústředním tématem stalo ženské přátelství, a to se mi taky opravdu líbilo.

Overall, I liked it. It had some strong moments, especially at the climax. The haunting of Wellwood's house by the witches had my heart pounding. Nice. Blame it on the media and fairytales I grew up with, but you write witches a certain way and it freaks me out. I think Grady Hendrix did a great job on the characters. They felt nuanced and authentic to me. I had some gripes with the novel as well, however. Some more tangible, but minor, and others more on a personal level that I'm not sure would make sense to someone else or I can't put my finger quite on it yet.
