There was a lot going on in this book. There was a lot of darkness but there was some brief light here and there.

when they got captured by vaisra and one of the cike I can't remember which called chagan weird. Just the banter they had in general the small amounts we got

Rin made some terrible choices and I don't know if she's likeable as such but I think she's realistic. Of everything she's been through and the mental torment she's always in how can she really be expected to make all the perfect decisions. Is it really so unbelievable she would find some solace in being led even if ultimately it was wrong. The cike follow her even though she is clearly not doing well and they aren't blamed for that decision.

though I was mad at the way Run discarded them

I am not sure if I enjoyed everything about this book but the fact I have so much feeling about it suggests it deserves a 5 star rating.

I loved Nezha and Rin in the first book and Nezha really seemed to be developing and learning but now he is a complete traitor and even before that ending he did some super questionable shit. Kitay is the best and I am so sad about the Cike

It felt like a loss of momentum.

The evilness of capitalism (and video games) has postponed my posting of this book. But the first half-ish of this book really felt repetitive with Rin's character. The love interest, the drug addiction, her lack of wanting to be the main character (but is) were the same points until the last quarter of the book. And the Atlan trauma. The last quarter of the book though? Really good. I loved the expansion of the magical/mythology themes.

I did read the historical elements of the book regarding the Chinese revolution, the post first poppy war with japan, and I do think it is incredibly interesting to think of Rin as Mao Zedong makes so much sense. Even after specific elements that happened with the plot of this book. The ending made me more excited for the next, but so did The Poppy War going into this book. I just hope Kuang doesn't use the same points as the plot structure until the 60% mark. Either way, I am stoked to see what The Burning God will bring.
