Wow, truly kept on the edge of my seat with this one. I saw the movie first, and it just does not do the book justice. To be clear, the movie got the tone 100% right, which was an awesome discovery, but the whole adventure was way more involved than the movie could ever have expressed. Easily a favorite - I’ll definitely have to read more Andy Weir now.

My friend has been recommending the movie to me for ages but I didn't want to watch it until I read the book. I'm glad I read it, really enjoyed it (more the human side than the technical stuff but it didn't impact my enjoyment of the book at all)!

A thrilling novel about a nerd stuck on Mars, well, an engineer and botanist astronaut. I probably would have enjoyed it more had I not read Project Hail Mary first, but I still liked it. Some of the dialog I could see being off putting to some, but it does replicate how nerds talk, admittedly. The style of journal entries made sense for the book, but a few of the problems that Mark Watney faced seemed unnecessary,
especially the dust storm that was hyped up for several chapters then ended up being easy to navigate around. Felt like very little payoff and had me thinking "wait, that's it?"

Still can't help myself from enjoying it so much.

What a book. Witty, real, inspiring, downright hilarious, amazingly written. I loved the movie and I really really loved the book. I think anyone who liked the movie would like the book to some extent, even if they're not a big reader. It's wonderfully written and I couldn't put it down. Plus, I appreciate that Andy Weir followed through on the "science" part of science fiction.

I really liked this book!! I think the author does a great job with establishing character voice. It's very funny. Also the science isn't (or at least appears to not be) technobabble, which is easier to read than made-up words and obviously screw-y science. The story also does a good job of balancing using Murphy's Law (anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time) and having things work out without it seeming contrived. It's obviously scifi, but it feels like it's actually something that could actually happen (a hundred years from now when we have the tech). I also really like the ending - it's very hopeful about the way that humans interact with each other.

Most of the sciency stuff was confusing to me but my knowledge of engineering and physics is close to zero. The characters were fun and well fleshed, and the dialogue bits made me chuckle out loud. Overall good but I don't think I'll be re-reading soon unless I suddenly acquire three more braincells.
