I’m a pretty open minded reader but there are certain things I love that keep me choosing books with similar themes: magic, young people being heroic, and books that help teach me about other cultures and especially Black experiences. This book had all of those things and I LOVED IT. Set in Nigeria, the main characters are a group of young people who are Leopard People, practitioners of juju, learning their identities and powers with magic. I’d been waiting to read the sequel to Akata Witch for a long time and I was not disappointed. Now I want to go back and reread the two books back to back to catch all the things I missed.

I love the world and enjoyed reading the book but the plot was meandering and the climax not very climactic; it suffered from too much after material that went by too quickly. The world and the writing though are still very worth it.
