What I love about this series is how uncomplicated the magic feels, how I learned a great deal about African life, and how deftly Okorafor handles relationships. Love that the fragile male ego isn’t lashing out at others, that they deal with the love triangle without taking it out on each other or anybody else. Read. This. Book.

I just couldn't get myself to care about the story and some of the non English words really took me out of the story because I didn't understand them

I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the first one. It was still a fun read but didn’t quite keep me as captivated.

Again, I’m in love with Nnedi Okorafor’s writing, world-building, and characters. A confident 5 stars for me. Just like Akata Witch, the story pulled me in and made the book hard to put down. I loved the focus on Sunny’s continued character development and the deeper dive into the Leopard world. Excited to continue the series.

“Stay out of trouble. Be positive forces to the world.”
“Overconsumption is a universal human trait,” Orlu pointed out. “And so is ignorance.”
“Leopard People read books by everybody and everything. We look outside and inside. But you have to be secure with yourself to do either . .”

I liked this second book less than the first, but it was still interesting. For me, it was just missing some of the magic school sense of wonder vibes that I crave. I think the coolest parts were the new gods & creature side-characters: Mami Water, the giant spider-god, the giant flying grass cutter (I did have to google images of grass cutters! It turns out they are not the same as grasshoppers...lol).
Again, the pacing felt a bit off...too much dragging in the middle with a rushed action sequence ending. I was shocked at how quickly Sunny figured out how to defeat Ekwensu. Would have been the perfect opportunity to lean into the "Warrior" title of the book and put in some cool training sequences to really see Sunny's skills develop. Instead, WAY too much time spent on the fucking love triangle and Sunny's idiot brothers, in general. I did not care about them, and actively hate love triangle nonsense. Give me more cool Nsibidi magic and cute creatures instead, please!!
