3.5. This was so creepy and dark but not what I expected horror to be. I actually really enjoyed it even though the confusion lol

First C. Ward I have finished- glad I did.
Scottish castles, world destroying serpent lore, creepy snake handling cult leader “Uncle” and his poor young captives of mind, body and soul. Nothing could go wrong, right?
Ward does a truly superb job building a dank and desolate atmosphere to set this tale of gothic suspense. We learn the horror of what happened to the cult members mainly through the memories of unreliable narrators, Evelyn and Dinah. I would have rated it higher but I found it a just bit long, the back and forth was a bit too much and honestly I didn’t quite understand the very endingEve and the Inspector’s meeting was weird and I just didn’t get it (but it didn’t really matter much - at least I don’t think so??)
Overall I highly recommend it for good unsettling read: will give Ward’s other novels another try.
* great narration with Scottish accent- yes!
