It seems like a lot of folks don't like this one, I think it's because many fans of Tintin want a pure action story. This one has more science fiction, mystery and intrigue, and I'm into it.
Moderate: Alcoholism

A scientific expedition including leading European experts is leaving shortly on a voyage of discovery in Artic waters. Its objective is to find the meteorite which recently fell into the Artic region. It is believed that part of the meteorite may be protruding above the surface of the water and the ice...
So, it seems that I have read these The Adventures of Tintin books in slightly the wrong order. I started with [b:Red Rackham's Treasure|146109|Red Rackham's Treasure (Tintin, #12)|Hergé|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1352642695l/146109._SX50_.jpg|729618], which is the twelfth book, before discovering that this is the tenth and the other I found is the eleventh and is linked, story wise, to the twelfth.
This book, is an independent story, however, and involves a celestial event where a meteorite passes close to the Earth with a fragment crashing into the Artic. Can Tintin, Captain Haddock, and their posse of scientists, reach the meterorite before their rivals?
Dive in to find out!

This is definitely one of the weirdest Tintin stories. Other than King Ottokar’s Sceptre, I’ve never seen a Tintin story that has this much urgency or a race for something as critical to the story. It makes for a very interesting story. Also of note is how apocalyptic the tone is early on in the story, which must have reflect how Hergé felt about World War II and how much of a world ending catastrophe it must have seemed to him and so many others in Europe at the time. It is also one of the few Tintin stories to adopt some elements of science fiction with the strange phenomena Tintin faced when he lands on the meteorite including the exploding mushrooms, giant insects and giant apple trees.
The very unfortunate part of this story that doesn’t survive well into today’s world is the portrayal of the main villain, Bohlwinkel. He is an obvious antisemitic stereotype as he has a big nose, is a greedy American financier who will stop at nothing to prevent Tintin from getting to the meteorite if it means potential riches to be made (which reflects Hergé’s disdain for American big business which was Bohlwinkel’s nationality in the original printing as opposed to the fictional nation of Sao Rico in the current printing), receding hairline, and is heavyset. What makes this even more problematic is the fact that this story was serialized in a Belgian newspaper that was under Nazi control at the time, and Hergé didn’t have a problem with that. It wasn’t done out of malice though. According to further research, it was the style of the times as far as depicting Jewish people was concerned, but that doesn’t excuse how bad the stereotype is today. As a result, I have docked this story a star for containing it.
Fascinating story in a lot of ways, but also has some bad imagery that doesn’t age well; hence the slightly lower than average grade I’ve given it.

It was fun to read even thought the beginning was a but of a trudge, over all an enjoyable read
