The language is almost poetic which raises this novel above the average. Reminiscent of a Stephen King, Anna runs with her young daughter from her unfaithful, unfeeling cruel and ambitious husband. There is a thread of the uncommon as Anna and the people who also stay at the motel she is hiding out in all have heard voices. As Anna's husband pursues her, the danger ramps up. The premise is compelling and the tension terrific but the mystical voices aspect become convoluted and ultimately an almost unnecessary distraction.

This books fantastic. I could hardly put it down. Way underplayed in the blurb but worth the read. Keeps you on the edge and then pushes your imagination over it. Highly recommended.

I don't know what I was expecting from this book- I thought it would be a Gone Girl style mystery thriller, but it was so much more...weird, and surreal and trippy and scary.

A confession: this is the first book so far that I've marked as "read" without finishing. It's not like there aren't going to be more books or more things to say, and if I was a better person I would just move on and not worry about getting credit or social media points.

However.

I found this book so tedious that I want credit for every minute I spent with it. I heard on a podcast this week that the apex of the literary experience sitting down silently with an object as the writer's inner sensibility melds with the reader's imagination. This book did not reach those heights. In fact, I thought it was more like a boring person telling a boring story, say, Kristen Stewart describing the traffic she hit on the way to the post office.

I don't want to pile on, negativity is just too easy. But I really didn't like this book, and would not recommend it.

A really good book with some amazing quotes. I for one was not crazy about the last third of the book but it was original and kept me interested.
