Habib's memoir focuses mainly on her identity, her sense of belonging, her queerness and her relationship with Islam. The writing is plain and simple and it makes the memoir very accesible; she doesn't dive deep into certain issues and I respect her decision despite feeling some elements could have been explored more for a more rounded narrative.

While I liked the fact that this was a story from someone whose experience was so different from my own, the whole story lacked personality or feeling or something.

It felt like the author was keeping the reader at arms length, almost like reading a news bulletin about things that have happened in the author’s life we no introspective element to it which left the whole reading experience feeling cold.

"Dedicating your life to understanding yourself can be its own form of protest, especially when the world tells you that you don't exist."

This book was really great. I don't read a lot of memoirs, but I am so glad I picked this one up. Samra's unapologetic queerness in combination with her Muslim identity was amazing to read about. So many people say that queer Muslims don't exist and like the title says 'We have always been here' just because you don't see something doesn't mean it's not there.
