I'm continually surprised by how romance authors manage to integrate deep topics into a narrative that is also light and hopeful. Definitely look at the TWs before reading if you need to. This is an adorable romance that also deals with trauma, and trying to live fulfilling lives while healing from that trauma. I love romances like this where the characters face deep, intense issues in their lives. The realism really helps me connect to the characters and makes the HEA even more triumphant.

Enjoyable book, however, I would not
make out with my boss in the middle of a workday. In fact, I would not sit in my boss’ lap in the middle of a workday. Also, if people communicated like adults, there would be no grand gesture needed. Lastly, kind of shitty of Siobhan to make Emily hide the secret, then once her son is all mad, be like “yeah sure banish her back to the USA, just as long as the book gets written!” Like why even agree to that with your son when you put her in that position in the first place?? And also sweet Emily, there is no contractually binding agreement that forces you to leave because oh so sexy Irish ex-boyfriend says so.

this was an unexpected 5 star read for me. I absolutely loved it.

SYNOPSIS:

Emily needs to get away from her life in the states. She writes a letter to her favorite author in Ireland asking her to finally finish her book series. She’s surprised to find she gets a job offer to be that authors assistant, so she moves to Ireland, intending on staying a year to help Siobhan. She’s meant to be her assistant, but she’s also meant to be working in The Last Chapter, a bookstore. She has a sort of enemy dynamic with the owner, Kier. She also has some lusty and daydreaming feelings about this man, who gets on her last nerve and all around just irritates her because he seems so indifferent towards her. Come to find out, he is Siobhan’s son. As the weeks pass, Kier still seems as if he doesn’t want her there, but he has his reasons.  As he begins to tolerate her more, he reveals that he and Siobhan didn’t have a great relationship once her books became popular because of his stepmom abusing him when Siobhan left on book tours. He felt she chose writing over him. Emily helped him see that she didn’t, as her main character was modeled entirely after him. She helped him fix his relationship with Siobhan, and the two became a couple. Though Siobhan then confided in Emily that her cancer was back, and Kier didn’t know. She wanted to finish the book before she got too sick, since this time she was terminal. Once Kier found out, he felt betrayed and he and Emily broke up. They managed to still finish the book, helping Siobhan by writing the last chapter. She then passed in her sleep the night before Emily was set to leave Finn’s Hollow, as that was the deal, she leaves once the book is finished. She stays for the services, and is offered an interview with Siobhan’s editor. She takes the interview in Dublin and is offered the job. She planned to go attempt to win back Kier, but he got to her first and made a grand romantic gesture, admitting he was caught up in grief and was taking his anger out on her. He apologized and they got back together. The epilogue showed a year down the road and the book finally being printed and delivered, and Kier and Emily happy together.

Very entertaining read. I was definitely not expecting it to be emotional, so that took me a bit by surprise. Likeable characters and fun references to other books. Very cozy setting. Definitely a good emotional cozy winter read.

As if it wasn't already a daily struggle to not drop everything and run off to Ireland (let alone to do so and work in a small town bookstore while living in a cute cottage) before reading this, "Love at First Book" just made that constant daydream that much more enticing. Between characters semi-competitively flirting with book quotes and outrught making me legitimately cry (something I am not quick to do), this has quickly become a favourite book of mine.
