Short, sweet, and everything you want from a book about books.
A brooding bookshop owner, a reclusive author, and an unwanted new employee from the US in a tiny Irish village.
This book gives a little mystery, a lot of unspoken sexual energy, and a ton of heart. Thanks to NetGalley and Jenn McKinlay for an ARC!

this was fine. mostly.
i didn't read book 1 and didn't feel like i was missing out on anything while reading this one, so that's a point in its favor.
the characters were okay, emily more so than kier, and the way he spoke to her when they first met and around the 80% mark was just unnecessary. the romance was mid and i genuinely couldn't see what they saw in each other, but i'll give it some credit and assume part of it was because em challenged kier and it helped him grow (not that it was her responsibility).
the writing is where it came crashing down. it felt repetitive at times and the excessive thesaurus usage was a bit grating. you can say a lot without using complicated words. there were some other issues, like too-long paragraphs that could've been edited down or used full stops instead of commas, and i felt like that dragged down the flow of the narrative.
overall, this was okay. not groundbreaking, but okay.
also this was published in 2024. it should go without saying that we don't need h*rry p*tter references in books anymore.

3.75 ⭐️ - this book was cute! I think it had a lot of potential that unfortunately just sort of fell flat a bit, but the concept was great and I still really enjoyed reading it.
Emily moves to Ireland to work at a bookstore and as an assistant to her favorite author, Siobhan, who’s writing the last book in Emily’s favorite series. What she didn’t realize, though, is that her boss at the bookstore is Siobhan’s grumpy son, Kieran. Emily and Kieran engage in a battle of wills over Siobhan’s writing, Kieran concerned that she’ll overwork herself and Emily set on helping conclude the series. That is, until they can no longer deny their attraction to one another. With a bit of a deadline on Siobhan’s book, Emily is stuck between a rock and a hard place - does she prioritize the book despite her fast growing feelings for Kieran? And will doing so risk everything they have?
Again, I really enjoyed reading this book! I just think that the writing wasn’t as polished compared to other similar books I’ve read recently. It felt immature? I’m not sure that’s the best word, but extensive use of exclamation marks and driving a nickname into the ground just feels like the writing is underdeveloped.
I also was bummed that they didn’t really explore much of Ireland in this book. Most of the plot was confined to the bookstore so it felt like the plot could have taken place anywhere.
All that said, this was also a really lovely story of a woman finding a positive maternal figure (her mom SUCKS), and it was so nice seeing Emily heal a bit in that way.
3.75 stars from me but I would recommend it if you’re looking for a quick and cute Irish read!
