'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz' is a great and colorful modern fairy tale that is more elaborate than the famous film version of 1939, although that movie is pretty faithful to the source material. For example, in the book Kansas is gray, even Dorothy's family members. The biggest differences are that in the book Dorothy first meets the witch of the North, and Glinda only much later; the silver shoes of the book, which became ruby slippers in the 1939 adaptation, and that only Dorothy sees the wizard of Oz as a giant head. The other characters see him as respectively a lovely lady, a terrible beast and a ball of fire. Dorothy utters 'there's no place like home' on page 30 (in my edition), but this phrase doesn't come back in the end, unlike in the film, where it's a charm.

The book is colorful, adventurous and entertaining, and stands out because of Baum's dry wit and great imagination. W.W. Denslow's illustrations contribute a lot to the wonderful atmosphere. No wonder this children's novel became an instant classic.

Positively strange, though I'm certainly intrigued to know what might follow.

This was my first time reading it, and I was amazed to discover just how different it is from the iconic movie. Dorothyโ€™s shoes are actually silver (not ruby!), and so many other details I thought I knew came straight from the film rather than the book.

This edition was gifted to me by my daughter โ€” a stunning MacMillan Collectorโ€™s Library copy, and I absolutely love this collection. It made the experience even more special.

The story itself is such a charming, fast-paced adventure filled with heart, courage, and friendship. Yes, itโ€™s a little darker and more violent than I expected for a childrenโ€™s book, but it reflects a different time in storytelling. I adored following Dorothy, Toto, and her new friends down the yellow brick road.
